Welcome to Our First Newsletter!

We're so excited to share ideas with you as you begin (or continue) your "inventing" journey.  Maybe you have an idea but haven't acted on it yet.  Or you have a great invention and need to know the "next" step.  We hope to provide you with real ideas that you can use each month, so that you can get your dreams off the ground!

So, let's get started...
AreyouinventorAre You An Inventor?
What does it take to be one?

Ordinary people are coming up with great ideas every day.  Inventions are simply solutions to problems. If you ever had a problem that you solved, you have the potential to be an inventor.

I will bet that many of you solve problems in your lives every day. If you can solve a problem for yourself, that's great!  However, if you solve that problem for others, they will pay you and that's even better. You can make the world a better place by developing an idea that will make someone else's life better and get paid for doing so.

Have you heard of Sara Blakeley?  She had a problem:  she didn't like how her backside looked in pants.  She started looking for a solution and started by cutting the legs out of her pantyhose and just wearing the control top part of the pantyhose.  Sara not only solved the problem, but she went further and developed the idea.

It took some perseverance, because it wasn't easy to convince people that wearing the top part of pantyhose was a good idea. But she believed in her idea and got a patent for it. Sara spent her extra time and her $5,000 in savings to developing the idea out of her apartment.  She got her product produced and begin to make cold calls to small boutiques until one day she got the call:  Oprah loved her new product.  "Spanx" was born!  Her new little company is now making millions of women happy, and Sara's company is generating over $250 million dollars in sales a year.

Every good idea starts with a problem. What problem is in your life, waiting for you to solve it?  You may find that your problem is a blessing in disguise. Is there an idea in your life that is begging to be solved? Can you persevere beyond the dream killers and doubts that keep most people from fulfilling their dreams? Are you ready to become an inventor?

Avoid the "dream killers!"

"Dream killers" are the thoughts that everyone has at some point  that stop you from reaching your goals. Once you learn how to overcome these thoughts, you will be on your way to achieving your dreams of becoming an inventor.  Here are some of the dream killers to look out for:
  • I can't do it because ...
  • I have never invented anything before
  • I don't have a lot of money
  • I can't compete with the big companies
  • I don't have the time or someone has probably done it already.

Excuses are dream killers. Sometimes they come from within, and sometimes they come from well-meaning friends and family who will tell you it can't be done.  Don't let the dream killer excuses keep you from realizing your dreams!  Give it a good fight, and protect your idea. Sometimes you even have to keep your idea to yourself until you have gone further in the process so that your friends and family can't discourage you.

Start with the problem that is near you. That's where your consumer instincts will help you to see things that would not be not be apparent to others.  Have you ever said, "This product would be better if... or I wish this thing would do this..."  Maybe you've even tried to change an existing product to fit your needs or looked for a product that didn't exist? If you answered yes to any of these questions, then you are well on your way to becoming an inventor!

You can do it too!

I was an unemployed housewife who loved hats, had a lot of them, but also didn't have a place to store them. I looked everywhere, and could not find what I needed, so I made it. That's where my journey with inventing began.

Take a second look at the problems and challenges that you see around you.

My little storage problem turned in to my first invention and began this exciting journey down the path of inventing.  My idea for a hat rack was licensed to a manufacturer for thousands of dollars within five months, and now I get royalties whenever they sell my hat rack. It is being sold at several online retailers including Target.com and Bed Bath & Beyond. I went from problem to idea to market, and you can do it too!
