THE BALLAD OF CLIFF YOUNG

In 1983 before the break of dawn
he woke, and by the lamplight put his trousers on
and made his way toward the race's starting line
all the people staring thought he'd lost his mind
but he had done this all before without the crowd
so all the people staring didn't get him down

All he needed was to know himself
And what he had inside

Cliff was never thought to be a genuine contender
One thing no one knew was Cliff was never a pretender
He said he'd do what no one could
and he made it sound too easy
Just keep his old feet moving til he crossed the finish line

The sun was fast asleep and so were all the rest
but in the dark he shuffled on to pass the test
he said the storm was coming and he carried on
and when the morning came, still he was going strong
and soon he caught the field while they slept in fear
but he couldn't stop while knowing that the end was near

All he needed was to know himself
And what he had inside

Cliff was never thought to be a genuine contender
One thing no one knew was Cliff was never a pretender
He said he'd do what no one could
and he made it sound too easy
Just keep his old feet moving til he crossed the finish line

He knew the way
and he would not be swayed by their dismay

as everybody realized what end would come
they marveled at the farmer and what he had done
and as the nation stood as one and cheered,
he knew that after all he'd done the sky was clear
he crossed the line and knew that it was true
don't let the others tell you what you cannot do

All you need is to know yourself
and what you have inside

Maybe you were never thought to be a real contender
one thing no one knows is you were never a pretender
so go and do what no one can, I know that sounds too easy
Just keep your feet moving til you cross the finish line

Maybe you were never thought to be a real contender
one thing no one knows is you were never a pretender
so go and do what no one can, I know that sounds too easy
Just keep your young feet moving til you cross the finish line
