OUR NATURAL STATE OF HAPPINESS & GENTLENESS |
In our last issue we discussed how each of us is born as a happy and gentle being.
|
SO WHAT HAPPENED TO OUR NATURAL STATE OF BEING? |
The Dali Lama suggests that anger, aggression, and even violence may arise, but it's typically on a superficial level when we are frustrated in our efforts to achieve love, affection, or understanding. There is an internal conflict.
|
ALTRUISM-DEFINED AS THE UNSELFISH REGARD FOR THE WELFARE OF OTHERS |
New research from scientists such as C. Daniel Batson, Nancy Eisenberg, and Dr. Linda Wilson reveals some very interesting conclusions:
- We are not just compassionate but often altruistic.
- In researching over 100 natural disasters, Dr. Wilson found the victims had a strong pattern of altruism and helping other victims rather than dwelling on their own plight. And the victims tended to avoid later psychological problems, such as Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. To sum it up, being compassionate is good for everyone and is healing, which creates a WIN-WIN.

EXERCISE |
This next week I invite you do the following:
1. If the opportunity arises, be aware of the compassion of a young child who seeks to comfort you
or even a stranger.
2. Enter into a conversation with a person to whom you've had difficulty relating. Enter into that
conversation with compassion and see what happens.
3. Be aware of a person towards whom you have some negative feelings and enter into a
conversation with compassion and see what happens.
4. Observe your reactions in these situations. Were you more open? Did you feel contentment,
peace of mind, healing, or happiness?
I really look forward to hearing from you and learning together.

"We weren't born with the purpose of causing trouble or harming others. For our life to be of value, I think we must develop basic good human qualities-warmth, kindness, compassion. Then our life becomes meaningful and more peaceful-happier."
-The Dali Lama from The Art of Happiness
