ALTHEA GIBSON & DR. JOHNSON

As we celebrate National Black HIstory Month, let's look at Athea Gibson (1927 - 2003) who went from the center of HarLem to the center of Wimbledon.  Gibson was raised in a low income household in Harlem.  She captured the attention of a physician, Dr. Walter Johnson, who was active in the black tennis community.  From there, Gibson became an African American woman in an all white, exclusive tennis club.  She was the first African-American woman ever to win  the English Grand Slam Tennis Tournament, Wimbledon.  She won 11 major titles including the French Open, Wimbledon and the U.S. Open. She overcame great odds to accomplish amazing feats and inspired many.  Gibson is truly a hero.

EXERCISE

I invite you to do two things this week:

  1. NAME A HERO IN YOUR LIFE.  Is it a parent, a relative, a student, an employer, an employee, a Rabi or church minister, a teacher, a coach?  Think of someone who has inspired you to acheive your goals and dreams.  Then call them and say thanks.  If you can't call that person, then call someone else and tell them the wonderful story.  And of course please tell me who is your hero and the reason.  I really want to know.
  2. HEROES NEED ENCOURAGEMENT.  There is a hero out there waiting for your encouragement and help.  It could be a young person, someone in a career change, someone with great potential who is struggling.  Just take the simple step of picking up the phone, offering encourgagement, and asking how you can help.  You will feel great.  Please tell me the results.

"I always wanted to be somebody. If I made it, it's half because I was game enough to take a lot of punishment along the way and
half because there were a lot of people who cared enough to help me."
