"I Made a Mistake" = A Shame-Free Zone

Dear ,

John ImageWelcome to Issue 136.  If you did not receive a previous issue, you may use the archive link below to view it now.  The mission of "Marvelous Mondays" is to offer an inspirational thought, a practical exercise, some humor, or a simple tip to jump-start your week and to enhance your life, business, outlook or relationships.

Please feel free to forward "Marvelous Mondays" to others who will enjoy it.

BACKGROUND

Focus has been our recent topic.  In the last issue (click here for Issue 135) we discussed gossip as a major interruption of our focus.  We looked at gossip as defined by Matthew and Terces Engelhart in their book "Sacred Commerce."

Matthew and Terces own the Café Gratitude restaurants in California and will soon be opening one in Kansas City. These restaurants have a unique policy that encourages an employee to admit a mistake. Here's how it works. In most restaurants if a waiter drops a tray full of food, there would be a stony silence, embarrassment, and a lot of staring. Instead, at Café Gratitude, the waiter stands up and enthusiastically announces to the whole restaurant, "I made a mistake". The other servers would applaud and laughter would erupt throughout the restaurant. This shame-free policy is a healthier way to handle mistakes and to create a positive environment.

EXERCISE

This week I invite you to do the following:

  1. Create a "shame-free zone" and play the "I made a mistake" game. You can do this in your work place or home, or other environment.
  2. Explain the game to those who will be involved.
  3. Of course feel free to make adjustments to the game in any way you think will make it more successful.
  4. Please let me know your results.
