UNMET EXPECTATIONS
We have discussed expectations, how to express them, how to negotiate them, and how to make requests. In short, how to get your needs met.

Now let's look at unmet expectations. I call this a BREAKDOWN, which is the breaking or violating of a commitment, promise, or agreement. Neil Sedaka sang, "Breaking Up is Hard to Do." Today we'll discuss why breaking down is also hard to do. We'll discuss breakdowns in both the business and personal context.

BUSINESS BREAKDOWNS AND CHOICES
If an employee causes the breakdown, the supervisor and the employee have choices.  Here are just some of the choices.
1.  Supervisor's Choices:
  • Emotional:  The supervisor can whine, complain, get loud and angry, berate, or ridicule.  Does this work?
  • Donal Trump Them:  "You're fired."
  • Open up a new way of communicating by renegotiating the terms
  • Surrender:  You can decide to let it go.
2.  Employee's Choices
  • Get angry or defensive
  • Quit
  • Respond in a way to keep the job

BREAKDOWN IN PERSONAL RELATIONSHIPS
A typical example is the teenager who returns the family car full of litter and empty of fuel, which is a breakdown of the agreement.  There are a lot of choices.  Here are a few:
1.  Parent:
  • Take the car keys away
  • Ground the child
2.  Teenager:
  • Apologize and immediately clean and refuel ALL the family cars
  • Get rides from others
  • Get a job and buy a car

WHAT IF YOU DON'T LIKE ANY OF THE CHOICES?
Often a person does not like any of the choices.  You still need to just pick one and move on.
EXERCISE
This week, I invite you to share the Marvelous Monday with someone in a business or personal relationship.

Tell them you'd like to use the language of "breakdown" as a tool for communication and getting your needs met.  The success of this exercise will be shown by the ACTION taken.

Alert: Because of patterns and habits, you may encounter some obstacles. If I can be of any help in this or any other way, please let me know.
