A SURPRISING STUDY ABOUT MEDALS, PRIZES AND AWARDS

GOLD STARS FOR CHILDREN.  Studies show that using gold stars to motivate children only works for a limited time, whereas another group of children who did not get stars eventually outperformed the gold star kids.

CHAMPIONSHIP RUNNERS. Paul Herget in the Scientific American documents that the major factor in keeping runners (even champions) from improving their speed is not any physiological limit.  Surprisingly, it is achieving a medal or setting a record that stopped most of them.

SALARY AND CAREER LIMITATIONS. Studies also show that many people max out at a certain compensation level or rank.  For some people the figure of $150,000 is their barrier.  They have made up things in their mind about people who earn more than that or they stop for some other reason.

WHAT IS THE LESSON? --- MASTERY
We are not likely to fully develop ourselves or our talents by just focusing on the gold medal.  Instead, we should look at the process and the journey, which is the principle of MASTERY
EXERCISE
I certainly expect that many of you will find this issue 121 challenging and controversial.  That's good!  I want you to reflect and then give me your response because I am really interested in hearing from all of you, including teachers, parents, coaches, leaders, employees, athletes, salespersons and retired persons.

I invite you to consider:

RELATIONSHIPS. Have you experienced dating, sharing, growing and romancing with someone?  Did this lead to a ring, which is a symbol of a commitment?  Could a ring also be considered a prize?  It's difficult to keep the luster on the diamond and of course, it takes both people.  Would it be helpful to see our relationships as a path and journey?  The path and the journey will have a lot of rocks along the way.  Of course, if the rocks become boulders, then that must be addressed.

CAREER. I invite you to look at your career.  Have you attained a certain level of compensation, achievement, or rank?  Have these markers stopped you?  Or do you deserve more compensation, joy, fulfillment, or appreciation?  If so, what are you going to do about it?  Can you do it by yourself?  Has that worked in the past?  Do you deserve some help from an objective, trained person?  Do you want to take some action now?  It's as easy as picking up the phone.

**I am currently accepting a few new coaching clients.**
