SALVADOR DALI'S ART

I just returned from visiting the Salvador Dali museum in St. Petersburg.  His life and art are often misunderstood.  He is known as an atheist and surrealist; yet he actually converted to Christianity and became a classical/surrealist painter, with themes of life, resurrection, hope, love, and the Divine.

HIS UNIVERSITY EXPERIENCE AND HIS LIFE CHANGING EVENT

After years of study at the prestigious San Fernando Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Madrid, only one test remained, an oral exam to be conducted by the baccalaureate committee on the subject of Raphael.  Shockingly, Salvador refused to be examined, claiming he knew more than the examiners.  Of course, he was forthwith expelled.  His father was crushed and angry as he saw his son forfeit a degree and the security and honor attached to it.

WELL HELLO DALI, WELCOME HOME DALI

After being expelled, Dali began to travel and his spirit led him to Surrealism, where he prospered and achieved great fame before converting to Christianity and to classic art.  Had Dali stayed in his father's safe "home" of academia, he and the world would have been deprived of a profound artist.  Instead Dali knew that his true, authentic self (his "home") was to be a free spirit and a rebel.

EXERCISE

1.  I invite you to examine some area of your life: career, health, finance, relationship, spiritual practice.

 2.  Are you following your own spirit ("home") or following what someone else is telling you or told you in the past? Are these well intentioned persons placing limitations on you?

3.  Are you sure that what you're doing is still best for you and still authentic for you?

4.  Or, do you want to explore some other possibility?  [Click here for issue 117 where George Leonard said that the best method to get objective feedback is from a teacher or a coach.]  By the way, I am currently accepting a few new coaching clients.
