THE MASTER CURVE

I am not using "mastery" in the sense of perfection but rather a commitment to a process or a journey to accomplish a skill or a discipline.  There will be spurts of progress, then a drop to a plateau, then another spurt of progress, then a drop to a plateau, and then the process repeats itself.  The drawing of the master curve below is from George Leonard's book, "Mastery - The Keys to Success and Long-Term Fulfillment".  This curve is not intended to be exact but is a demonstration that we spend more of our time on plateaus.  The challenge is to stay committed to practicing and practicing and practicing while we are on the plateaus.

LOVE THE PRACTICE, LOVE THE PROCESS, AND THE VALUE OF INSTRUCTION

Since we are all on plateaus most of the time, why let ourselves get frustrated?  Many students, students of life, athletes, musicians, vocalist and others find real happiness while practicing their skill during their plateaus.  I call this, "plodding the plateaus on your journey for mastery".

George Leonard says that most people spend their lives refusing to take the steps towards mastery.   Leonard cites the number one key to mastery as getting first rate instruction.  This instruction can come from books, films, tapes, or computer learning programs.  However, he points out that these techniques do not allow for personal feedback.  Therefore, he favors instruction from a teacher or a coach.

EXERCISE

1.      I invite you to pick something you want to master.  It could be career, health, peace, listening, physical exercise, relationships, spirituality, retirement, or confidence, etc.

 2.     Then consider accepting George Leonard's recommendation to "get first rate instruction".

3.     In the meantime, say to yourself out loud, "I love practicing; I love being on the plateau."
