MASTERY | As the classic Masters begins, this is a good time to begin a series on mastery. Mastery is a process and journey of a commitment. The happy news is that no experience or special talent is usually required.
What do you want to be a master of? Your career, your health, exercise, your spiritual life, a sport, relationships, listening and empathy skills, etc? Remember, we are not talking perfection.

THE DABBLER, THE OBSESSIVE, THE HACKER
| George Leonard's book, "Mastery - Keys to Success and Long Term Fulfillment" lists the three personalities that fall off the path of mastery. We admire mastery in others and may yearn to achieve it.
- The Dabbler: dubbed by Carl Jung as the puer aeternus (the eternal boy). He starts with great enthusiasm and cannot wait for the next lesson or lecture. He sees some improvement and then hits a plateau. Yet, he cannot accept the plateau. So, he says the situation just isn't right and then starts looking elsewhere for a new career or relationship.
- The Obsessive: This is a bottom line, results driven person. He must read everything on the subject. He gets tapes, takes extra courses and makes spectacular progress quickly. Yet, when he reaches the inevitable plateau, he becomes very frustrated. He will bounce back with some brief spurts of progress, then hit a sharp decline and will eventually fall off the path.
- The Hacker: This person is content to stay on the plateau forever and makes little effort to change, improve or grow.
|
EXERCISE | While the three categories do not always fit precisely, Mr. Leonard contends that a basic pattern prevails for each person.- I invite you to look at one area in your life you have tried to master but have not accomplished.
- Ask yourself if you have been the dabbler, the obsessive, or the hacker.
We'll continue this discussion next week. Be assured there is hope and help.
