FEEDFORWARD IS POSITIVE
|
"Feedback" is a management tool used to evalueate employee performance. Today, we are going to look at "FEEDFORWARD" as another tool. I am not implying that leaders should abandon regularly scheduled performance reviews. Rather, I will discuss how, in every day interactions, "FEEDFORWARD" can often be preferable to feedback. I wish to acknowledge and thank my coaching colleague, Dick Hurius, and his writings on FEEDFORWARD, which form the basis for this Marvelous Monday issue.
Even when feedback is constructively delivered by management, it is often received by the employee as negative since it involves errors and problems. It always deals with the past and is usually taken as a personal criticism instead of a performance critique. Do you agree? So, it is no surprise that neither management nor the employee is comfortable with this process.
On the other hand, FEEDFORWARD focuses on the future and offers solutions. Doesn't that sound positive?
Here is an example: Suppose you give a presentation to management and that neither your content nor your delivery meets your standards or the expectations of management. In a feedback session your supervisor would have you relive this embarrassing experience. Instead, in a FEEDFORWARD session your supervisor (and hopefully you) come up with positive suggestions for the future.

EXERCISE
|
I invite you to engage in a FEEDFORWARD this week either as management or as employee. Or you can do this within an organization or within your family or a personal relationship. I'll look forward to hearing your positive results.
