SLEEP
This is the first in a series on sleep.  I acknowledge Julie Deardarff and her article in the Chicago Tribune.

There is a certain bravado in the often heard "I can get by on just 5 or 6 hours of sleep."  But what are the consequences?  Let's look at Richardo Muti, the famous Chicago Symphony Orchestra music director.  Stress and sleep deprivation caused his doctor to order a month-long rest.  Some doctors hospitalize their patients.  Can any of us afford a sudden leave from our responsibilities for one month?

Sleep and stress research at the University of Chicago, the Northwestern Memorial Hospital Center for Integrated Medicine, and John's Hopkins Medical indicates exhaustion and sleep loss:
  • Can cause reflux, heartburn, and stomach problems.
  • Can reduce serotonin which in turn causes insomnia and depression
  • Can cause irritability leading to serious problems.
  • Can cause a state of hopelessness.
  • Can be a risk factor for a heart attack.
We also know from our own experience that we can make terrible decisions when we are sleep deprived and could cause auto accidents. 

Unfortunately, some Americans consider sleep as just laziness.  That type of thinking needs updating.

EXERCISE
First, examine whether you are getting enough sleep, if you are, this information is a confirmation that you are doing a great job.  Pass on your good sleeping ritual to someone else.  If you are not getting enough sleep, I invite you to list 3 benefits of getting just 45 minutes more sleep each day.  I invite you to commit to getting 45 minutes more sleep twice in the next week.
