MARVELOUS MONDAYS

May 17, 2010 - Issue 70

F.E.A.R. =
False Evidence Appearing Real

*This is a first in a series on fear.*

 Dear ,
WeJohn Imagelcome to Issue 70.  If you did not receive a previous issue, you may use the archive link above to view it now.  The mission of "Marvelous Mondays" is to offer an inspirational thought, a practical exercise, some humor, or a simple tip to jump-start your week and to enhance your life, business, outlook or relationships.

Please feel free to forward "Marvelous Mondays" to others who will enjoy it.
FEAR
For the past several issues, we have been confronting "change."  Often, change stirs up fear because it is new or because we are fearful of failing.  Then our thoughts run crazy and take over us, sending us into one worst-case scenario after another.  We even get a reaction in our gut.

It is then that I remind my coaching clients of the acronym for FEAR-FALSE EVIDENCE APPEARING REAL.

TWO EXAMPLES
1.  If you are a parent of a 7th grade child, what is your reaction when you get this message?  "This is Mrs. Smith, Billy's 7th grade teacher.  Please call me."

2.  You receive an email from your supervisor that says, "Please see me immediately."

How do you react?  Is your "fear" button pushed?
EXERCISE
In the next week something will happen to you or someone will say something to you that could produce anxiety or fear.  I invite you to do the following:
  • Notice any "gut" or other body reaction.
  • Tell yourself that it might be False Evidence Appearing Real.
  • Observe how that affects your ability to deal with this.
  • Of course share that with someone and you may also share that with me.
