LESSONS FROM MARCH MADNESS AND PHIL JACKSON
Phil Jackson IMageWhether or not you are watching the NCAA March Madness, there are lessons for all of us by reflecting on the book called "Sacred Hoops" by Phil Jackson, the highly successful NBA basketball coach.  When he took over the Bulls, he vowed to create an environment based on selflessness and compassion, the principles he learned as a child while studying the lakota-sioux, Christianity, and zen.  He built a team that blended individual talent with a heightened group consciousness.

EXERCISE
As you watch the games this week, be attentive to a coach whose team has this group consciousness.  I also invite you to look at your own team: at work, at home, or in your organization.  Look for this selflessness and compassion.  Look for the group consciousness and then, shout out your praise.

"Working with the Chicago Bulls I've learned the most effective way to forge a winning team is to call on the players' need to connect with something larger than themselves, to require the individuals to surrender their self-interest to the greater good so that the whole adds up to more than the sum of the parts."

- Phil Jackson
