LINCOLN'S COMMITMENT
President Lincoln was committed to the business of preserving the Union.
Mercury Image
The picture in this email is the Ordinance of the State of South Carolina whereby it dissolved "the Union between the State of South Carolina and the other states united with her under the compact entitled 'The Constitution of the United States of America.'

With that backdrop and the Civil War looming, President Lincoln gave his first inaugural address on Mar
ch 4, 1861.  He reminded the crowd that he had just taken the oath to "preserve, protect and defend the Constitution."  While he was willing to negotiate on even the most sensitive and divisive issues, he made it clear that he was intractable in his commitment to preserving the Union, even if it meant accepting war.

Reflection:  Is there anything in your business that you are committed to preserving?  It could be core values at work such as:  making a meaningful contribution, leading others, helping others, etc.

EXERCISE
I invite you to consider an exercise that I use with coaching clients who are exploring personal commitments in their careers or are considering a career change or move.

Focus on one aspect of a core value in your business or your career.  For example: personal integrity, preparation for a meeting, arriving on time, completing a project, delegating or treating employees with more respect.  Make it specific and make a commitment to do it by March 4 [the anniversary of Lincoln's commitment].  Of course, I welcome anything you would like to share with me.
