"I ALWAYS WANTED TO BE SOMEONE"
|
Welcome to the first day of National Black History Month!
Althea Gibson (1927 - 2003) went from the center of the streets of Harem to the center of the courts of Wimbledon. She believed in herself and did not care what the world said.
Gibson was raised in a low income household in Harlem. She captured the attention of a physician, Dr. Walter Johnson, who was active in the black tennis community. From there, Gibson became an African American woman in an all white, exclusive tennis club. She was the first African-American woman ever to win the English Grand Slam Tennis Tournament, Wimbledon. She won 11 major titles including the French Open, Wimbledon and the U.S. Open. She overcame great odds to accomplish amazing feats and inspired many. Gibson is truly a hero.

EXERCISE
|
This week, consider who is a hero in your life? Is it a parent, a relative, a student, an employer, an employee, a Rabi or church minister, a teacher or a coach? As we goal set, think of someone that has inspired you to achieve your goals and dreams. I encourage you to call them and say thanks. If you cannot call that person, then call someone else and tell them the story. Of course, you can always share your thoughts with me.

|
"I always wanted to be somebody. If I made it, it's
half because I was game enough to take a lot of punishment along the
way and half because there were a lot of people who cared enough to
help me." - Althea Gibson
