Greetings!

Welcome to the Friendship Center's newsletter! Please notice the beautiful tulips on our logo, a detail of a painting by Jerome Lawrence whose work graced the Carter Center's Christmas card last year. The Friendship Center is an outreach program of Holy Comforter Episcopal Church, providing meals, transportation and activities to people who live with poverty, mental illness and various disabilities. Although we are based at Holy Comforter, we are funded separately by friends and supporters like you. In a way, the Center defines the meaning of friendship; it is a place where people come to know and care about each other, to provide companionship and support. The editorial team, along with guest writers, will bring you into the programs and activities at the Friendship center and help you get to know the participants, volunteers and staff members whose effort and enthusiasm make the programs so exciting and meaningful to all involved.
Artist Spotlight: Clifford Williams

clifford with tigerClifford Williams is a big guy with a feel-good personality; that is, just being in his presence makes me feel good. Clifford truly has a way with people...and a way with a paint brush. Whether it's an idyllic landscape or a dramatic portrait of an animal or bird, it's obvious that this man is a talented artist.  When I asked him if he has always been an artist, he said that from the time he was a little boy until he went to work as a young man, he was always drawing or painting.  When he went to work, he ran out of time for art.  "I thought I'd lost it", Clifford told me.   When he started coming to The Friendship Center he started working again.  "At first I wasn't very good, then it came back."  Clifford often gets inspiration for his animal portraits from "Wild Kingdom" on the Discovery clifford's landscapeChannel.  "I often have a sketch pad with me when I watch". Clifford's love of art and love of people touch everyone around him, artists, volunteers...whoever has the good fortune to be around when Clifford is there.

Five members of the Friendship Center had upbeat comments when interviewed about their experiences.  John (below) has been here a long time; he first came in 1988 and has been here permanently since 1998. Part of the fun he has here is the music class, and he is very impressed that the music teacher comes all the way from Woodstock.  Edna (left) likes everything at the Friendship Center.  She plays the piano and has made a lot of friends.  The Friendship Center is a good place to relax and socialize for Robert. He especially likes chess and bingo.  Unlimited coffee is one plus for William, as is painting.  Gregory eloquently described his fondness for Holy Comforter.  "I'm a person with schizophrenia, and others here have bipolar and schizophrenia;john sago I know I'm not the only ones with problems....It's just a good place."  He likes the food, the clothing closet and the help Father Mike gives him.  He goes on to say that the center gives him a purpose, a chance to help other people, and a place where at least one person will know he has moved on.
