Issue No. 30
June 2009

Hello and Welcome!

CPM Blue Shirt
Our current Butler and Household Manager program commenced on May 26th and will run until July 19th. For the first time, we also offered individual modules that can be taken on their own or in combination with others. A number of our clients sent members of their staff for some training in such areas as Clothing & Valet Care, Table Setting & Service, Housekeeping and Household Management.  All of our Academy courses are available individually, however, we have highlighted a few on the right hand side of this newsletter.

We were pleased to have the Academy featured on CityTV (Toronto) Breakfast Television on May 29th and CHUM FM on June 8th.

We are also very pleased to report that we have already secured a placement in a private residence for two of our current students, which bodes well for the entire class upon their graduation in July.

Course dates have been set for our autumn sessions, which commences on September 14th. We are now accepting applications.

Putting Luxury Into Perspective

Rob Report

There has been some demonization of luxury in certain media over the past while. This is unfortunate as the luxury market is a major contributor to the economy across the world.   We share some thoughts:

"I think of luxury as being a catalyst for evolution...Luxury companies have lighted the way for the rest of the world. The higher cost of their products and services enables them to invest in exploring new ideas and directions; it enables them to establish the standards that guide other types of businesses in their development and growth.  Luxury brands are, by definition, leaders, and they will continue to bring tremendous value to society."
Margareth Henriquez, President & CEO, Krug

''There are an awful lot of people whose livelihoods depend on the luxury-goods manufacturing business."

Christopher Georges, President & COO, Bentley Motors Inc

"The media backlash against luxury...affects thousands and thousands of jobs."
Joe F. Foggia, President, Christensen Shipyards Ltd.

BT Comes Calling

Jennifer Valentyne
On Friday May 29th Breakfast Television came calling at the Academy.  The popular Canadian Breakfast TV show sent their host Jennifer Valentyne to learn about the Academy and the life of a student Butler or Household Manager.  Jennifer spent time with several students and interviewed Charles MacPherson and Bonnie Aprile, our Executive Housekeeper.  Jennifer and the television audience  learned some great tips for ironing, laundry and stain removal as well as table setting.

In total, they broadcast five segments during the morning show and we received many phone calls in follow-up afterwards. The highlight of the morning for Jennifer was when Charles presented her with an autographed Butler stick of her own.

Thoughts From The Industry

"Even though Four Seasons Hotel and Ritz-Carlton Hotel are both great brands, luxury has changed since the inception of those brands", said Horst Schulze, president and CEO of West Paces Hotel Group, the parent company of Capella Hotels and Resorts.

"Twenty-five or 30 years ago, luxury used to be a big lobby with a glass elevator," Schulze said. "Luxury isn't about the number of chandeliers in the lobby. Top travelers want privacy, personal service and to be connected to the culture around them. They don't want to be part of a large group (i.e., conventions) that controls their stay. It's amazing how we change. Thirty years ago, we determined the product. Now, the guest determines the product."

Potter concurred, saying a five-star setting is delivering what customers want instead of what a hotel decides it's going to provide.

"Just make sure you have the best bed in the world," he said.

It's clear everyone is suffering across the board, and luxury hotels are no different, said Milton Pedraza, CEO of The Luxury Institute, citing occupancy in the high 50s to low 60s.

"And you can't make money with that kind of occupancy," he said.

Many hotels are cutting costs, such as the number of employees, but it's risky because if customer service slips, reputations will suffer.

"Some hotels have to cut back, but they need to do it with a scalpel instead of a hatchet," Pedraza said. "It's a huge risk. I'm hearing a lot more about it-cutting back on personnel, training and the quality of employees.

"[Hotels should] ...enhance the people and the service instead".

Testing Housekeepers' Skills

Charles MacPherson Placement has recently introduced an enriched methodology to its interviewing process.  Taking advantage of the facility at the Charles MacPherson Academy for Butlers and Household Managers, our interviews now consist of a practical segment where a housekeeper's skills are evaluated in the following areas:

ˇ    Wardrobe Management
ˇ    Cleaning and Care of fine surfaces and furnishings
ˇ    Table setting
ˇ    Ironing

Using a 5-point system, housekeepers are evaluated in the above areas prior to being presented to clients.  We share the results with our clients so that the decisions they make whether or not to hire a housekeeper are enhanced by good, useful information.

The Butler Speaks

Butler with Dessert
We've wanted to create a blog for some time now, however, we've delayed on starting one because we weren't sure of the format, objective and direction we would like it to take.

We knew that we didn't want it to be like other private service blogs.  We wanted to avoid making it overly promotional and excessively reliant on written text alone.  We did want to make it fun, informative, interactive and a place where private service professionals and those working in the luxury hospitality sector would enjoy visiting on a regular basis.

We're excited to report that we think we figured it out.  The blog is called The Butler Speaks and it is found at www.thebutlerspeaks.com.   We invite all of you to visit and participate.

Currently posted on the blog is a series of videos on suitcase packing.  On the way, we have some additional exciting content and interviews that I'm pretty sure is going to keep all of you dropping in for more.

We look forward to seeing everyone at The Butler Speaks.
Housekeeping 101

Academy - BrochureRed wine stain removal is always stressful even at the best of times.  In Housekeeping 101 our Executive Housekeeping Teacher Ms. Bonnie Aprile teaches student Ms. Susan Purdy three natural stain removal techniques for this specific stain, do you know what they are?
  1. Salt & Club Soda
  2. Baking Soda & Vinegar
  3. Lemon Juice
The art of stain removal is something that every employee will have to deal with both in their personal home and their employer's home.  The art of stain removal is first to never panic, second know what the stain is, there is no such thing as an all purpose all in one magic trick to removing stains and third be patient and use natural cleaning products first without harsh chemicals.
