Issue No. 26
January 2009

Hello and Welcome!

CPM Blue Shirt
It is with great pride and honour that I write this newsletter announcing the successful completion and graduation of the first class at the Charles MacPherson School for Butlers and Household Managers.

When we built our new school, I had a very different concept and vision from what had ever been done before.  We built a Household Management Laboratory.  Teaching solid, necessary and strong basic skills that can be used within every household.  Students are taught how to function in residences ranging in size from Pied ą Terre apartments to large mansions.  There is even a course on Hotel Butlers, which allows the students to understand and work within this important and growing industry.

Throughout the eight-week program, students are in class six days a week, 8 hours per day covering a total of 23 different subjects with 13 different teachers.  It is a very thorough and intensive course to say the least!

Congratulations to the first graduating class of November 2008

Ivor Spencer dies at 84

Academy - ClassroomIt is with great sadness that I learned yesterday that Ivor Spencer died on January 10, 2009.

Although I did not know him well, I do remember very fondly the kind gracious emails we used to exchange.  As many of you already know it was Ivor Spencer who pioneered and started the first British Butler School and was a successful toastmaster throughout his 50 year career.

He is survived by his wife and a son and a daughter.

Ivor Spencer, MBE, toastmaster, was born on November 20, 1924. He died on January 10, 2009, aged 84

Thank you Mr. Spencer for all you have done for us.  You have helped bring the The Butling profession into the 21st century!

Case Study - Luxury Hotel

In November, 2008 Charles MacPherson Associates Inc., was asked by a renowned luxury hotel in NYC to deliver a proposal to provide a team of butlers to support a very prominent royal guest and his large party. The guest required 24/7 service for a period of at least 2 months. The hotel was unable to provide the full service with its existing staff complement. The ability to speak Arabic was also considered an asset.

Hotel Management was under extreme time constraints and required a proposal, and if accepted, a solution within days. The hotel also required CMA to payroll the team of butlers and to provide project management support.

After an initial consultation and discussion, we recommended the following:

·    Development of a staffing plan to support a 24/7 schedule
·    Developing job descriptions for the Head Butler and Butler positions
·    Locating the Head Butler at the hotel
·    An on-site training day for the butler team
·    An appropriate payroll budget for the project

On a Monday, the hotel reviewed our recommendations and agreed to retain CMA. The outcome was that Charles MacPherson Associates Inc. recruited a team of 9 butlers within 4 business days (three of these butlers were Arab speaking).

CMA also successfully completed a thorough site review and delivered a one day training seminar for the entire butler team prior to commencing their duties on the Saturday of the same week.  As the project continued CMA was also able to offer advice to Hotel Management on the effective servicing of a guest who was used to a high level of service in his many residences.
