Greetings Everyone,

This is the first of what I hope to be monthly or at least quarterly newsletters.  In them, I will be telling you about upcoming events, both at the bookstore and around Seaside that we are involved in.  I will also be letting you know about books we've been reading that we think are particularly noteworthy.  If you would rather not receive these newsletter, just call and we'll be happy to remove you from our list.

In addition. I will try to keep you informed about what is happening in the book world.  As I am sure you know, the book business is changing dramatically and rapidly.  On-line shopping continues to grow and e-book growth is phenomenal.  While for several years Beach Books has had a website, it has not been possible to buy books from it.  But it's time for us to jump into the pool.  Starting in the next few weeks, we will be selling books through our website.  And we will be selling Google e-books.  Google e-books are downloadable to any e-reader, smart phone or computer with the only exception, the Kindle, which Amazon has chosen to allow e-books t be purchased only from their website.  More about this soon.

Lunch with Sarahlee Lawrence
River House

We're very excited to have Oregon author and Pacific Northwest Book Award winner Sarahlee Lawrence with us on Monday, March 7.  Her book, River House, a Memoir, is a young woman's story of returning home. As a girl growing up in remote central Oregon, Sarahlee Lawrence dreamed

of leaving her small town in search of adventure. By the age of twenty-one, she had rafted some

of the most dangerous rivers of the world as an accomplished river guide. But living her dream as guide

and advocate, riding and cleaning the arteries of the world, led her back to the placeshe least expected to find herself--her dustybeginnings and her family's ranch. River House is the beautiful chronicle of a daughter's return,

her relationship with her father, who helps her

build a log house by hand, and the reversal

of their desires.

Sarahlee will be discussing her book as we enjoy a catered lunch at the bookstore.  As you know, space is limited so please let us know early to reserve a spot.

Cost: $20.00 includes lunch and a signed copy of her book.

Jonathan Evison
West of Here

Jonathan is one of the Northwest's major new talents and we are thrilled to have him visiting Beach Books on Wednesday, March 23rd.  His book, West of Here, has been receiving the highest accolades including being called by Publisher's Weekly "a damn fine read".

Set in the fictional town of Port Bonita, on Washington State's rugged Pacific coast,

West of Here is propelled by a story that both re-creates and celebrates the American experience-it is storytelling on the grandest scale. With one segment of the narrative focused on the town's founders circa 1890, and another showing the lives of their descendants in 2006, the novel develops as a kind of conversation between two epochs, one rushing blindly toward the future and the other struggling to undo the damage of the past.West of Here

What We're Reading Now
 Karen:

Healer

by Carol CassellaHealer

I don't know why it took me so long to read this since I loved Oxygen, but now that I have started it,I don't want it to end.  It's the story of Claire, about to launch a medical career when pregnancy and marriage derail her.  Then her husband invents a cancer blood test and they find themselves wealthy beyond belief.  But now, he's gambled it all on another cancer treatment that goes awry under dubious circumstances.  Claire and her daughter move to their dilapidated vacation home in the middle of nowhere and she tries to keep the family together by working at a public health clinic while he tries to salvage his discredited lab.  Carol's characters are always so real that I feel I know them or would very much like to.

Alexa:

The Lying Game

by Sara Shepard

I am in the middle of reading Sara Shepard's new series.  Sutton Mercer has it all.  She is popular, co-captain of the tennis team and beautiful.  But she's dead.  Emma, on the other hand, has gone through all kinds of foster homes, only to find out on Facebook that she has a twin sister - Sutton.  On the day, they are supposed to meet, a mysterious video of Sutton surfaces.  Now Emma must pretend she is Sutton.  We'll see how this one goes.  And who killed Sutton?

 Ann:

Between Shades of Gray

by Ruta Sepetys

Drawing from her Lithuanian family history and interviews with survivors, Sepetys has crafted an unforgettable debut novel.  It is set in 1941 and told through the eyes of a15 year old Lina.  Her family is ripped from their home by Stalin's soldiers, crammed into cattle cars, and sent to labor camps in Siberia.  Their courageous fight to survive is inspirational and kept me turning the pages.  The characters are so beautifully developed, you feel their despair, their hope and admire their resilience.  It's a horror story, but full of love and a budding romance.  Young adults will love it, but so will others my age.  Check out the video of Ruta introducing this amazing read Between Shades of Gray.

Maria:

You Know When the Men are Gone

by Siobhan Fallon

In this book of loosely connected short stories Siobhan Fallon plunges us right into lives of the women at the Fort Hood, Texas army base and into the lives of the men in Iraq. These gritty, understated stories are searing in their emotional intensity.  You'll come away feeling you've lived through days of the Iraqi war, both as a soldier and as a worried spouse--and you'll never again be nonchalent about what we are doing to military families.

We hope you will be able to join us for our upcoming events which in addition to the two authors will include a "Petting Zoo".  That's so those of you who, like me

until very recently, are new to electronic books can get the feel of the different e-readers.  More on that and our "'virtual" bookstore as we get closer.

Sincerely,
