This month: Samantha from Brampton and Oakville: FI, is it worth it?
As a graduate from the immersion program, I can say with confidence that continuing my education in French benefited me in many ways. In elementary school I was in French Immersion that began in Kindergarten at that time. From there I went to a French Immersion high school, and graduated with bilingual certification. In University I continued my studies in French along side a Business Degree that coupled nicely when I went into the workforce. To be bilingual in Canada gave me many advantages when interviewing for jobs. I seemed to always have the upper hand when an employer needed to make a decision between candidates. When I decided to become a teacher, again my fluency in French enabled me to not only get into a great University, but it also gave me unlimited employment opportunities immediately after graduation. Currently I am a grade 1 French Immersion teacher, and I continue to believe that children benefit greatly from learning a second language. As a child, learning French challenges them, and encourages higher order thinking. As an adult, French will open doors and broaden their opportunities in both work and travel. The early years are the most critical, and the more immersed a child is in French, the better their comprehension and pronunciation. Continuing French throughout the summer will not only better their French, but it will also alleviate any anxieties about approaching a new grade, and new expectations in September. Camp Tournesol is a great way for kids to keep up their French knowledge while also having fun! |
