Greetings!
The Patterson Library Youth Services Team is excited to offer a whole sea of programs this summer for all ages. Our weekly summer Story Times, beginning July 12, have a great theme - Make a Splash, Read! Kids can also join the Story Time Garden club, back for a second year. They'll love a chance to get their hands in the dirt. Check out our long list of special happenings for young people. From ballet to scary stories, there's something for everyone. See you this summer!

Summer Story Times
July 12 - August 20
Registration open June 1 - July 3
Peepers: For Babies - Pre-walkers
Tuesdays at 10:15 AM
This hour-long program helps children develop early literacy skills while they play. The hour starts & ends with story and circle time; so come for some or stay for all!
Teeny Turtles: For Walkers - 3 years-old
Mondays at 10:15 AM
30-minute program of stories, songs, finger plays and time to share books.
Slimy Salamanders: For 3 - 4 years-old
Mondays at 11 AM or Tuesdays at 11:30 AM
40-minute program of stories with related songs, activities and crafts. Children MUST be potty trained.
Artful Otters: For 5 - 7 years-old
Wednesdays at 10 or 11 AM
45-minute program of stories with related songs, activties and crafts.
Cookin' the Books: For 8 - 12 years-old
Thursdays at 11 AM - 12:30 PM
An hour & a half-long program of stories and food crafts. Please tell us if your child has any food allergies.

Story Time Garden
Kids will help care for the garden and share stories of gardens, gardeners and some pests too! For ages 5 and up. Garden story times begin at 6 PM.

Make a Splash:
Decorate the Library June 2 at 4:30 PM
We're getting ready for our "Make a Splash: Read!" summer theme. Kids of all ages, come and decorate a bathing suit or towel to hang on the clothesline -- all over the library! |

Discover Ballet
Putnam County residents and former principal dancers with the NYC Ballet, Maria Calegari and Bart R. Cook share their love of ballet and theater with children and families. Along with ballet students from Arts on the Lake, they will perform excerpts from their holiday puppet performance "The Magic of the Nutcracker Tale." Kids will have the chance to try some ballet positions and steps. |
Author Visit: The True Story of Marty, Horse of a Different Color
Wednesday, June 9 at 4:30 PM
Kids ages 4+, meet Patti and Richie Burke, the mother and son author and illustrator of The True Story of Marty, Horse of a Different Color. Celebrating diversity and friendship, this book has awesome drawings done by Richie at age 9 (he's 11 now!) Books will be available for purchase and signing by the illustrator himself! We'll do a craft souvenir, as well. Registration is required. |

Daddy & Me Story Time
Saturday, June 19 at 11 AM
Kids, bring your Dads for a special story time celebrating Father's Day! We'll share some terrific Dad books, and do a craft together. Please register children and grownups! Ages 2-5.

Meet Triops:
The oldest, living creature
Wednesday, July 28 at 3 PM 
Tyrannasaurus Rex came and went, but Triops Cancriformis has been around for over 220 million years! Kids ages 6 and up will love this program where they will learn all about these fascinating aquatic creatures and make a Triops puppet to take home. Bring along $15 plus tax if you'd like to buy a book and eggs to raise your own Triops! Registration required. |

Soap Making
Wednesday, August 11 at 2 PM
Teens ages 12 and up will craft handmade soaps that look, smell and feel wonderful using natural ingredients like glycerine, herbs and flowers. They'll look cool, too, with glitter, colors, shapes and lots of pizzazz! Registration is required. |

Reading Buddies
We're looking for youth volunteers, ages 8 and up, to be Reading Buddies, offering new readers a chance to practice their skills over the summer. Sign Language Workshop

Learn signing for early childhood in this fun interactive series for parents, children and parents-to-be! Babies can learn to sign before they can form words, and young children will enjoy the stories and movement of this program. Please register yourself and your child up to age 5.

Fun & Games at the Library
Tue. July 13 - August 17 at 3:30 - 5 PM
Back by popular demand for its 6th summer! Kids ages 8 to 14 can attend this weekly hour and a half session to play board games, listen to music, have a snack and play the Wii!

July 30: Imax 'Under the Sea'
narrated by Jim Carrey
A film for viewers of all ages where you become divers exploring the "coral triangle" of New Guinea, Indonesia and the Great Barrier Reef. Come see the beauty of these amazing endangered areas.
August 6: Finding Nemo
A favorite family film, Finding Nemo is the story of a young clownfish unexpectedly carried far from home. Viewers of all ages will laugh at the forgetful blue tang fish, Dory and the vegetarian sharks. |
Tour of Japan
Celebrate Tanabata!
Wednesday, July 7
at 2 PM
Children ages 3+ and a grownup will enjoy the traditional Japanese tale of the original 'star-crossed lovers' and craft traditional Tanabata decorations, one to hang on a tree at the library and one to take home. Please register children and grownups.
Kappa the Mischief Maker
Wednesday, July 14
at 2 PM
Kids ages 5+ will hear a traditional story of the Kappa (the inspiration for many a Pokemon!) using the Kamishibai stage. A folded fan decorating craft will complete this 90-minute program.
Scary Stories are Cool!
Wednesday, August 4
at 2 PM
According to Japanese tradition, scary stories keep you cool! In the heat of summer, come hear the story of The Hundred Demons -- not for the faint of heart! Make a scary mask if you can stop shaking!! For kids ages 5+.
Ocean Enviro-Art
Wednesday, August 18
at 2 PM
Come hear a story about people as caretakers of the earth, then make a fantastical aquatic creature out of recycled materials. Open to kids 3+. Please start saving whatever materials you think might be useful for an ocean creature craft, and bring them with you. Wear old clothes -- we'll be painting! |
