Profiles in Preservation: Thornton Ranch

Saturday, May 12:  MALT celebrates protection of historic ranch with public hike

Last summer, after almost a decade of effort, MALT protected the 1,000-acre Thornton Ranch near Tomales.  This spring we celebrate with a public hike and tour of this stunning ranch beef and lamb ranch, which was settled 160 years ago by the same family who founded the nearby town of Marshall.  Gary Thornton and his daughter Marissa (above), are clear that the ranch has not just been saved from development but for agriculture, and hint at future plans to enter the cheese-making business.  For more information on Thornton Ranch and to purchase tickets for the May 12 celebration hike, click here.

Joel Salatin of Polyface FarmsAccording to Time Magazine, Joel Salatin thinks "the ills of America - unemployment, obesity, disaffected youth - can be cured by going back to the land and its values, a return to what he likes to call 'normal.'"   On April 15, please join us for what promises to be an entertaining and thought-provoking discussion with Salatin, a Virginia farmer, author, and self-described

"mob-stocking herbivorous solar conversion lignified carbon sequestration fertilization" expert.  For more information and to purchase tickets, click here.

Berner recently announced his plans to retire at the end of the year after 27 years as the head of MALT, and colleagues gathered at the conference's annual dinner to celebrate Berner's achievements.  Among those honoring Berner were California Assembly Member Jared Huffman, who presented him with a California Legislature Resolution commending him for his years of service (pictured at right).  CCLT presented Berner with the California Conservation Lifetime Achievement Award, recognizing his "superlative success and lasting legacy to conserve California's agricultural landscapes."
Point Reyes Birding Festival
April 27-29 festival highlights Point Reyes' rich birding opportunities

Point Reys Birding Festival The Point Reyes peninsula and the cold waters off the Pacific Coast provide a particularly rich and diverse habitat for migratory and resident bird populations.  Nearly 490 avian species can be spotted in the area, some of which live or hunt for food on surrounding farms and range land protected by MALT.  Come see how many birds you can spot at one of the 70 naturalist-led hikes or tours offered at the Point Reyes Birding Festival.  Co-sponsored by MALT.  For more information and to see a list of events, click here.
