Can Marin County farmland
help fight global warming?

December 3, 6:30 P.M.

Learn more this Thursday evening at Food & Farming on the Urban Edge, an event at Cavallo Point in Sausalito co-sponsored by MALT and the Institute at the Golden Gate. The Marin Carbon Project, which is funded by the Marin Community Foundation, is investigating the potential for certain land management practices, such as the addition of organic soil amendments, to enhance the capacity of California rangeland soils to sequester carbon dioxide from the atmospherel. Lead scientist, Dr. Whendee Silver of UC Berkeley, will report on results to date. MALT Executive Director Bob Berner will explain the value to local farmers.  We'll also hear from Project Director John Wick and rangeland expert Jeff Creque.

The Marin Carbon Project is a partnership among the following organizations:
  • MALT
  • Marin Organic
  • Marin Resource Conservation District
  • Nicasio Native Grass Ranch
  • University of California, Berkeley
  • UC Cooperative Extension: Marin & Sonoma
  • USDA National Resources Conservation Service
Pre-registration is requested. A limited number of tickets will be available at the door.

Loren PonciaAn original gift
for the locavore
on your list

Delicious grass-fed,
Marin beef & lamb

Loren Poncia (pictured), owner of Stemple Creek Ranch and MALT board member, has generously offered to donate 10% of his beef and lamb sales to MALT through the end of January 2010. All you have to do is let him know you heard about this offer from MALT!

Loren's family has been ranching in Marin since 1902 when his great-grandfather Angelo Poncia first purchased the property the family calls home to this day. Loren's father served on MALT's original board of directors and cemented the relationship in 1992 by selling an easement to MALT, permanently preserving the land for agricultural use.

You can your order your meat on the Stemple Creek Ranch website or, if you prefer, contact Loren directly at 415-883-8253. Don't forget to mention us when you place your order: in the spirit of the season, you'll be supporting a local ranching family and MALT!

Can a car help protect the environment?
You betcha!

The Bay Area Open Space Council and the California State Coastal Conservancy have banded together to protect the environment one car at a time by raising funds and environmental awareness through the sale of a customized license plate. Find out more.

MALT & the California State Coastal Conservancy

Over the past ten years the Coastal Conservancy has provided Marin Agricultural Land Trust with more than $6 million in funding for farmland conservation. These funds have helped MALT permanently protect over 6,400 acres of Marin's food-producing family farms and ranches, including dairies, sheep operations, grass-fed beef suppliers and farmstead cheese businesses located in the Coastal Zone. The protection of these lands for agriculture also helps safeguard the many natural resources found here.

Visit our website to place your order. You'll be supporting farmland preservation, wetland restoration, and wildlife conservation in the Bay Area.
