Food Ingredient Innovations
|
 | |
Speaker:
Karl Kramer, President,
Innovation & Commercial Development for Tate & Lyle |
The CSIFT Program Committee cordially invites you to join members and friends for this month's dinner meeting.
Tate & Lyle is a $4 billion, global food ingredient and solutions provider. In a recent reorganization of the business, it placed innovation at the very heart of its future growth strategy by establishing a new Innovation and Commercial Development group (ICD) who are scheduled soon to relocate to a brand new, state-of-the-art facility in Hoffman Estates.
Speaker: Karl Kramer, President, Innovation & Commercial Development for Tate & Lyle
Karl Kramer, President of ICD, provides us with an insight into the innovation process at Tate & Lyle and how this is facilitated through its Stage Gate process. The presentation will illustrate the importance of open innovation and partnerships as catalysts as well as the need for early engagement of both customers and consumers so as to ensure that only commercially relevant novel ingredients are brought to market.
All of these concepts are brought together in a detailed case study on how Tate & Lyle launched its novel PUREFRUIT™ Monk Fruit Extract - a natural, great tasting, no calorie fruit-based sweetener in 2011.
Don't delay! See more information and Register Here!
Schedule:
4:00-5:00 PM Executive Board Meeting 5:00-6:00 PM Social Hour 6:00-8:30 PM Dinner & Presentation

New Professionals Section
The New Professionals are off to a great start for the 2011-2012 year. We've met many new people and have seen a lot of familiar faces. We've also tried to expand the event locations to accommodate more people in the surrounding suburbs. In 2011 we went bowling at Southport Lanes in Chicago, ventured to Goebbert's Pumpkin Farm in South Barrington, played bocce ball at Pinstripes in South Barrington, had wine and artisan cheese at Marion Street Cheese Market in Oak Park, and had a holiday happy hour at Brickhouse in Downers Grove complete with a hilarious white elephant gift exchange.

We're already underway planning fun activities for 2012. We're starting the year off right with Whirlyball in the city. Who doesn't love wiffle ball in bumper cars? This event always has a great turnout and we look forward to seeing you there. Save the dates for our exciting upcoming events:
- February 16, 2012- Trivia Night/Happy Hour at Harry's in Arlington Heights
- March 21, 2012- Greater Chicago Food Depository Volunteering in Chicago
- April 19, 2012- TBD
- May 17, 2012- Top Golf in Wood Dale
Please check the website for further details and remember to register online (fees apply to some events).

Hope to see you at the next event! |

CSIFT Committee News, Special Announcements and University Updates
~JANUARY MEETING HIGHLIGHTS
 | |
Dr. Vijay Arora, Chair, Program Committee and Chair-Elect |
We started the New Year with an outstanding dinner meeting speaker, Dr. Catherine Adams Hutt, President and CEO of RdR Solutions Consulting, specializing in food safety and health policy, and regulatory science. Her talk on the topic of food regulations was quite informative, thought-provoking and, at times, entertaining. She intertwined the history of food safety regulations and health policies dating back over 100 years, the recent enactment of the Food Safety Modernization Act and the 2010 Dietary Guidelines and the paradox of consumer safety and health. It leaves us wondering, is any of this working?

~CFAR MARKETING SUBCOMMITTEE
 | |
Nate Matusheski, Chair,
C-FAR Marketing Subcommittee |
The Illinois Council for Food and Agricultural Research (C-FAR) is continuing its administrative operations without a financial research appropriation from the State budget. Thanks to the support of the Chicago Section IFT, and other organizational and individual members, C-FAR has been able to develop a new research strategy designed to excite key stakeholders in the legislature and deliver clear returns on investment. They continue to focus on raising food and agricultural research as a key priority for the state, with the aim of getting the research appropriation reinstated.
C-FAR Chairman Chuck Cawley recently participated in a task force, coordinated by the Illinois Farm Bureau, designed to outline the current status of agricultural research in Illinois. The objective of the meeting was to address the challenge "How can we re-energize the public agricultural research model in Illinois in an environment with diminishing resources." A PDF of the report is attached to this posting for your review.
