2010 Mayors' Climate Protection Award Winners Announced

Chicago Climate Action Plan logo First Place Winners: Chicago and North Little Rock
 
Mayor Richard M. Daley and North Little Rock, Arkansas Mayor Patrick Henry Hays have been selected to receive the 2010 Mayors' Climate Protection Awards, a program sponsored by The U.S. Conference of Mayors and Wal-Mart Stores, Inc.

The Awards Program recognizes mayors for innovative practices in their cities designed to increase energy efficiency and curb global warming. An independent panel of judges selected the winners from a pool of 140 applicants. Mayor Daley won the Large City Category for the Chicago Climate Action Plan--a Blueprint to a Sustainable Future. Chicago and ICLEI Recognize the Winners of the Green Office Challenge 

Green Office Challenge logo Friendly competition to reduce energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions
 
Mayor Richard M. Daley and the Chicago Department of Environment, in collaboration with ICLEI - Local Governments for Sustainability USA (ICLEI), announced the winners of Chicago's first Green Office Challenge, an initiative to reduce energy consumption by businesses and greenhouse gas emissions from commercial buildings. 
 
A key strategy of the Chicago Climate Action Plan, the Green Office Challenge offers businesses an opportunity to gain a competitive advantage in green innovations and to cut costs, while saving money and resources. Almost 150 property managers and tenant companies participated in the Challenge, which set goals for participants over the course of one year. Join the Chicago Climate Action Plan team on the green carpet for the Chicago premiere of Carbon Nation, a documentary about climate change solutions, inspiration and action. Special Curbside Electronics Recycling Collections

The City of Chicago has partnered with PC Rebuilders and Recyclers to collect old computer and electronic equipment for recycling in various wards this summer for no charge. To participate, residents should leave their unwanted items near the curb in front of their residence before 8:00 a.m. Trucks will be sweeping the neighborhood picking up equipment between 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Designated days are July 10 - 41st Ward and July 17 - 40th Ward. Chicago residents can take their old computer and electronic equipment year-round to the City's Household Chemicals and Computer Recycling Facility (HCCRF) at 1150 N. North Branch (two blocks east of the Kennedy at Division St.). For more information, visit the City's website. Television sets are not accepted at HCCRF and should be taken to local charities and/or donation sites. Click here to view a map and list of organizations.
