Arts & Democracy Project Update

July 2010
Greetings from the Arts & Democracy Project!

It's summer conference season, and we've been busy.  In this update, we share reports on events in which we've participated and reminders about gatherings coming up.

Event Reportbacks

U.S. Social Forum
Arts & Democracy and our partners hosted a number of workshops and piloted the idea of a Creativity Lab at the U.S. Social Forum, held in Detroit this June. All told, our collaborative efforts allowed us to reach almost 1,000 artists, organizers and activists who participated in our programs at the Forum.  As Javiera Benavente notes in her blog post about the Forum, it was a rewarding and affirming convergence.

Creative Resistance Retreat
Arts & Democracy was honored to be invited to participate at this international gathering organized by freeDimensional for networks working at the intersection of arts, human rights and social justice. As Caron Atlas states in her blog post about the gathering, the retreat affirmed the power of a diverse multi-sector group of people working together on common concerns.

A Word of Thanks

Our many thanks and best wishes to Claudine K. Brown as she begins her new job as Director of Education of the Smithsonian Institution.  We are deeply grateful for her support of our work, and leadership in the field, while at the Nathan Cummings Foundation.  We look forward to continuing our collaboration with her in her new position.

As always, we're proud to highlight the great work in this field to support and cross-pollinate an extraordinary network of artists, cultural workers, policymakers, educators, and activists.

All our best,
