Message from our Music Director
Greetings, fair Portlandia recorderists!

I am looking forward to another invigorating session with you all and hope that this new year of 2012 is off to a good start for everyone.
One of the fun things about leading these sessions is having the time to browse through music and choosing works to share with you. Every time I search the on- line sites I am astounded at the sheer volume of free downloadable pdf files and the wealth of music that is out there. It is truly incredible.
For this session I have chosen festive music by Sweelinck and Telemann and..a little New Year's surprise!
We'll be celebrating the 450th anniversary of the birth of Dutch organist, Jan Pieterzoon Sweelinck, prolonging the holidays ever so slightly with his well loved and often sung motet Hodie Christus Natus Est. This joyous 5 part work poses nice challenges changing between the triple and duple meter several times throughout the piece.
Then we will segueway into Telemann's festive Tafelmusik, music intended to be played as entertainment while others dined. (We will refrain from eating while playing the recorder, however!) There are seven delightful movements, all with witty character descriptions that are sure to please.
Then, in keeping with one of the oldest traditions in Austria - the New Year's concert with the Vienna Philharmonic - we will end with a wonderful arrangement of Strauss the elder's Radetzky March!
Recorder sizes from Soprano to Great bass will be needed, and all sizes of viols or other stringed instruments are most welcome. For any of you who would like parts ahead of time, I am happy to send you pdf files. Please email me directly (vickiboeckman@comcast.net) and tell me know what part you want to play.
Thanks and see you soon! Vicki

Farallon Recorder Quartet presents
"Der Morgenstern" Music from German-speaking Lands
Concert at the home of Susan Campbell and Dave Brook in NE Portland. Space is limited, RSVP required. Email for RSVP and location: scamp@easystreet.net Tickets: $25, $20 for ARS/PRS members. Wine and cheese will be served. Cash or check only please.
NE Portland, February 11th, 7:30 pm
(concert repeats in Neskowin, OR, February 12th)
Farallon will start the program with its own version of a Hildegarde antiphon, and move on to explore the riches of German polyphonic music up through the 18th century. Works from the Glogauer LIederbuch and composers including Hofhaimer, Finck and Senfl, , Haussmann and Scheidt, J. S. Bach and Graun make a program of great beauty and thrilling fireworks.
Farallon Recorder Quartet (Annette Bauer, Letitia Berlin, Frances Blaker, and Louise Carslake) is a California-based early music ensemble which brings the music of the Medieval, Renaissance, Baroque, and Modern Eras to today's audiences with professional polish, verve, and precision. They employ a fascinating range of recorder sizes and period styles, ranging from six inches to six feet tall. Farallon's most recent CD recording, From Albion's Shores, has been described by Early Music America as "the sound one would get if one could turn honey into wood or stand underneath a caramel fountain." Farallon plays on a matched set of Renaissance recorders made by Adriana Breukink, Medieval recorders made by Bob Marvin, and Baroque recorders made by various builders. |
