Message from our Guest Conductor...

Hey folks,

cool dude

Here we are again for another rousing and jazzy PRS reading session.  I'll start by saying this has been a very interesting first year with my baby son.  He is almost walking!.  It is interesting learning to keep up with your young child.  It keeps you on your toes!

Anyway, with kid in mind, I just turned 41 and I am working very hard to sort out my meandering career.  Am I a jazzer, early musician, or modern symphonic player?  Am I a trombonist, recorderist, composer, teacher, or just a dad with too many musical hobbies?  Well!  Maybe I am all of them, but not a composer.  This is a life conundrum.  However, I have been throwing around ideas and been trying to write because I think that there needs to be more accessible and published jazz and contemporary music for recorders.  I didn't make it this time, but I hope to have the next time I come, a few NEW pieces.... just not this time.  Maybe like me, you will look forward to it in a year.

This time though, I have a few more Stan Davis tunes that are very good.  I have been enjoying getting to know his arrangements and every one of them has something to keep the ensemble grooving along.  They are so fun!  The three that I have picked this time are ones you might have heard of:  Singin' In The Rain, Handful of Keys, and Hallelujah - a Vincent Youmans tune from his 1927 show Hit the Deck.  Handful Of Keys, just in case you are not aware, is another Fats Waller tune which has a couple of serious tunes in it that keep the top three lines busy.  But hey, the basses don't get off easy!  They have to practically carry the weight of the whole song.  In other words, they also stay very busy.  The syncopation in this tune is plentiful but the flow feels very natural.  That is the first part of the fun!  Next, Hallelujah has two sections and will challenge your time feel a bit.  This is a very different style of tune from Handful but still just as playful and just as fun.  The last tune, Singin' In The Rain, will be our latin tune for this session.  It is in the beguine style and will constantly keep you stretching.  Halelujah and Handful Of Keys are both AATB and Singin' is SATB.

All right, enough for now.  You all be good now and I'll see you next Friday at the school.

Bryce

Search "recorder" and you'll find a very well established discussion list about recorder playing.  If you sign up to become a member of the group, you will receive posts from recorder players all over the world.  I recommend setting preferences to a daily digest form, so your inbox doesn't become flooded with individual posts.  The archive is also useful to search if you have questions that have likely been discussed before.
