From our Music Director...

Greetings Portland!

I had the extreme pleasure of attending the Portland Viol Consort when they performed in Seattle last week and as a result am freshly and completely smitten with Dowland's Lachrimaes, Pavans, Allemandes and Galliardes! I would put them in the category of pieces to take on the proverbial deserted island. I have chosen one of each and cannot wait to hear how they will sound with PRS recorders and viols...and perhaps a double bass or two...

Then I thought it would be nice to pair an olde Pavan with a 19th century romantic one, so I've chosen a 6 part arrangement of Gabriel Fauré's beautiful Pavane, Op. 50, written in 1887. Faure's Pavane was immediately popular and from its outset included in the standard repertoire of the Ballets Russes.

One of Faure's many duties in mid to late life was teaching composition at the Paris Conservatoire. Some of his talented young students at the time were Ravel, Enescu, Casella and Nadia Boulanger. The qualities that Fauré imparted were taste, harmonic sensibility, the love of pure lines. I hope you will enjoy playing this arrangement.

Then we will round off the evening by tappin' our toes to a Stan Davis arrangement of Milton Ager's "Ain't she Sweet!" Guaranteed to leave you smilin'.

We will need SATB and Great Bass recorders, any size of viols you want to play, and double bass!

Looking forward to seeing you all again soon!

Vicki

A Special Performance for PRS on Friday!

Glen
Composer Glen Shannon at CGEMR in 2009

In 1997, Glenn's Prelude & Fugue in D Minor for SSATB recorders was chosen best composition by the Chicago Recorder Society. This March, the American Recorder Society urges all members and chapters around the world to download and play his "The Harmonius Blockflute", during "Play the Recorder Month". The composition appears in the January 2011 issue of American Recorder magazine, or online at americanrecorder.org. Those of you who attended the Columbia Gorge Early Music Retreat two years ago may remember Glenn as an upbeat faculty member and skilled baton twirler.
