Hello!
Phil Neuman
I'm looking forward to leading the reading session on January 21st!  We'll be playing some fun English pieces including the lesser known setting of "The Leaves be Green" by William Inglot (reminiscent of the more famous version of the Browning tune by William Byrd), "Playford Suite" which is a lively setting I did of four of John Playford's favorite country dances: "Parson's Farewell", "Cheerily and Merrily", "St. Martins", and "Jack's Maggott".  We'll do several pieces that will also work well on crumhorns, sordunes, and racketts, because as you know, no early music event is considered complete without at least one rackett present.  Then we'll read Handel's Second Suite from the "Water Music", and then have some fun with Sammy Nestico's "Hay Burner" from the Count Basie library.  Hope to see you all there!

Early Music News from Eugene, OR

The Oregon Bach Collegium did a workshop last Sunday "The Food of Love: Music and Dance from Shakespeare to Playford" with faculty Shira Kammen, Judy Kennedy, Gayle Neuman, Phil Neuman, and David Rogers leading the various sessions.  We realized that all of us were "survivors" of the Oregon Shakespeare Festival's company of musicians and dancers from the dim past.  34 players and dancers were in attendance, playing recorders, cornetts, violin, viola, cellos, viols, sackbutt and crumhorns.  It's great to have a chance to play the dance music for live dancers to see how tempos and phrasings match the steps and formations.  We broke to smaller groups that worked on improvising accompaniments to one-line dances (Shira), dancing (Judy), recorder ensemble (Gayle), cornetts and sackbutts (Phil), and consort songs (David.)

We had a fantastic potluck meal and the evening ended with a performance consisting of things we worked on during the afternoon.  Rachel Streeter of the Oregon Bach Collegium did a great job organizing the event.

We are so pleased to announce the launch of our new website!  Please go check it out and admire all the great photos, read the new information about the Columbia Gorge Retreat, and check on the dates of the upcoming playing sessions at the Kennedy School.  Please update your bookmarks as we will be sending the old site into the abyss.  Loads of special thanks to my brother, Alex Tokar, for his volunteered time and web design prowess (see his Seattle based company, www.webcollective.coop), and Bill Stickney (http://williamstickney.smugmug.com/) for all his beautiful photos!  We hope you like it!

Happy musical web surfing!

Oregon Coast Recorder Society Loses One of Its Founders

by Corlu Collier

A staunch recorderist and participant in early music on the coast, Jan Christensen passed away some time between Nov. 13 and Dec. 6 at her home in Siletz, from natural causes. Many will remember her as that marvelous chef for lunches at the OCRS Winds and Waves Recorder Workshop.

Jan had many other interests and activities: she served for many years as a board member of the Midcoast Watersheds Council and the Lincoln County Library District; was an avid Master Gardener; and, with her late husband, at one time owned and operated a fishing vessel out of Newport.

In 1992, she was the first to join the fledgling Oregon Coast Recorder Society and was also a member of its consort Lost in Time. And, yes, she loved to cook. We will miss her greatly.

Winds and Waves 2011 is scheduled for April 30 through May 2, Saturday through Monday, at Sitka Center for Art and Ecology, and the faculty concert will take place Friday evening, April 29, at 8:00 p.m. in Lincoln City. For information, visit the website www.sitkacenter.org. Registration opens Jan 18.
