Hello Portland Recorder Society!
 | Vicki Boeckman, PRS Music Director |
I am looking forward to being back in your fair city. It feels like ages ago since I last led the PRS meeting. We have another wonderful season in store for you with accomplished guest conductors and a fabulous line up for the Columbia Gorge Early Music Retreat at Menucha in March.
The music I've chosen for the October meeeting will range from a lighthearted Venetian gondolier tune to a sober and contempletive work by Frances Blaker, ending up with some easy moving gentle swing. It will be an evening of many moods and colors - in perfect harmony with autumn in the Pacific Northwest.
We will start with "La Gondoletta", a sweet 6 part setting of a old gondolier tune by my German colleague, Irmhild Beutler. The overall sound is that of a barrel organ, images conjured up are those of organ grinder with his little monkey grabbing at pennies on the street... The bass line is very repetitive and simple, so this would be a perfect opportunity for novice bass players to give it a go and plunge right in. There is a challenging little sopranino part guaranteed to make you all giggle - at least the person playing it...
We will move on to Frances Blaker's "In sight of the Ocean", which is a powerful and hauntingly beautiful 6 part piece. "In sight of the Ocean" is dedicated to Corlu Collier, the director of the Oregon Coast Recorder Society. Corlu is a remarkable woman who has lived a long, varied life with many stories to tell. Frances wanted to write a piece that reflected Corlu's outer calm and incredible inner energy and intensity - much like the ocean that seems calm on the surface, yet surges with power below.
We will end the evening with a couple of lovely swing standards, beautifully set for 5 parts. "Bye Bye Blackbird" and "Someone to Watch over me". Bye Bye Blackbird has a typically cool, walking swing bass that will be challenging and invigorating and will lead the upper voices along very nicely. The sultry major 7th chords of "Someone to Watch over Me, penned by the inimitable team of brothers George and Ira Gershwin will leave us with a warm and fuzzy feeling for the rest of the evening.
All recorder sizes from Sopranino to Contrabass will be needed and all sizes of viols or other stringed intruments are most welcome. Buzzies will not be needed for this session.
For any of you who would like parts ahead of time, I am happy to send you pdf files.
Please email me directly and let me know what instrument you will be playing.
I am looking forward to seeing you all again!
Vicki

 | American Recorder Society News from Jeanne |
Recently, our very own PRS Vice Chair and CGEMR administrator Jeanne Lynch was elected to the American Recorder Society National Board. Last month, Jeanne flew to Chicago to attend their Fall board meeting. She has some very exciting news for us....
Greetings to the Portland Recorder Society from the American Recorder Society Board at their recent meeting in Chicago!
I am greatly honored to be part of this Board and part of such a worthy organization. I fell in love with the recorder when I first held one ten years ago. The communities of recorder players in Austin, in Houston, here in Portland, on the Oregon Coast, in Seattle, in the Bay Area, and now in Chicago are my extended family. These enclaves of amateur and professional players exist and thrive because of the American Recorder Society. Early on I recognized that the ARS is essential to the encouragement and promotion of the recorder and its music. Now I am lending my support to ARS in a very substantive way.
As a new board member I was a bit overwhelmed. Serving the recorder community from coast to coast, in the United States and Canada, with individual amateur and professional members, chapters and consorts, is a huge task. The board is geographically dispersed, making actual meetings quite challenging. That we do get together twice a year (yes, lots of emails, phone calls and skype-ing in between) is a testament to the commitment of the thirteen board members.
Throughout the year I'll give you updates on the exciting new activities and programs ARS is working on. But for now, let me return to my initial statement: "Greetings to the Portland Recorder Society!"
Our energetic and innovative Portland group has caught the attention of the national recorder folks. Although our chapter is very young, we're considered an awesome force. And now it's official! The 2012 American Recorder Festival will be right here in Portland, on July 25-28, 2012, at Reed College campus. Hundreds of recorder players, vendors, instructors, and educators will convene on our fair city!
As a warm up to that event, Portland will host the next ARS board meeting April 7-10, 2011. I'm hoping our chapter can get together to meet the Board and show them how fabulous the Portland recorder community is!
Also on the home front, watch the American Recorder magazine for the publication of Portlander Sean Nolan's composition. The Member's Library program of ARS edits and publishes compositions for recorders, and these works are included in the AR magazine at no charge as an ARS member benefit. Everyone's a winner on this one!
Hope to see you all at the October meeting!
