A Note from our Music Director, Vicki Boeckman

Hello everyone!

cherry tree

March is here! It is "Play the Recorder Month" (see ARS website for more info)  And Spring! Cherry trees, azaleas, forsythia, quince, magnolias, daffodils, etc, all gracing us with their vibrant colors and renewing our senses. The Columbia Gorge Early Music Retreat is just around the corner...Matthias Maute with Portland Baroque...Jordi Savall in Seattle! What a great month!

For our March meeting, and in celebration of Play the Recorder Month, I would like to do the Contrapunctus I from Bach's last great work, the Art of the Fugue and some works by the Australian composer Lance Eccles.  In doing so, we will play a broad range of styles ranging from the most formal of all- a strict fugal recipe - to silly descriptive tunes that will make you giggle. I was recently introduced to Eccles' works and found them to be quite entertaining. Words that could best describe his music are: witty, humorous, flowing, easily approachable and fun! What could be more appropriate for a recorder society play session?

Lance Eccles was born on  March 17, 1944. From 1982 till 2002 he was a member of the Reluctant Consort, a Sydney-based recorder group. Nearly all his recorder compositions and arrangements have been written either for that group or for meetings of the Sydney Society of Recorder Players.  By profession Eccles is a senior lecturer in Chinese at Macquarie University in Sydney. Besides teaching Chinese he has published books on the Shanghai dialect of China, on the Coptic language of Ancient Egypt, and on the Tetum language of East Timor. He has just finished writing another book, a grammatical commentary on the Syriac version of the Gospel of Mark. He also teaches Coptic each year at the Macquarie Ancient Languages Summer School.

As a composer, Eccles is quite prolific and the tunes seem to literally roll off his pen.  He has written works for 2, 3, 4, 5 and 9 part. For the meeting, I have chosen movements from Five Italian Folk Songs and from Spectrum. I am sure you will agree that they all are a delightful and refreshing addition to any recorder music library.

All recorder sizes from Soprano to Great Bass will be needed, and all sizes of viols are most welcome. Buzzies will not be needed for this session.

I am looking forward to seeing you all again.

Vicki

(Eileen has been a guest conductor with the Portland Recorder Society and taught at recorder workshops.  She resides in Albany, CA.)

Eileen Hadidian ( BA in Music, 1972), founder and artistic director of Healing Muses, has been named Albany Woman of the year for 2010. The announcement was made by California State Assemblywoman Nancy Skinner. Eileen was one of a select group of women to be so acknowledged by community leaders in East Bay Assembly District 14. Eileen and 13 other women, each representing one city in Skinner's district, were chosen because they have gone above and beyond the call of duty to make a significant difference in their communities. They will be honored at a special luncheon in Berkeley, CA, during Women's History Month festivities this March.

Healing Muses is a non-profit organization that brings soothing music, played on wooden flutes and Celtic harp, to Bay Area medical centers.. Eileen's work with healing music grew out of her own cancer experience. She used music for her own healing, and began to play for other cancer patients, exploring ways in which music can be used to soothe critically and chronically ill people. The professional musicians of Healing Muses draw on a diverse range of music from classical, folk and various world traditions to create a peaceful sound environment conducive to the well-being of patients and staff. Their extensive experience allows them to provide music as a healing tool to promote relaxation, diffuse pain, and reduce stress during hospital stays and procedures.

Mattias Maute, recorder, with Portland Baroque Orchestra:  Fri, Mar 12 & Sat, Mar 13 at 7:30pm (First Baptist); Sun, Mar 14 at 3:00pm (Reed)
In Vivaldi's time, there were two kinds of flutes - the transverse, held like the modern flute - and the "sweet flute," or flauto dolce in Italian, which we call the recorder. Guest soloist Matthias Maute from Germany will explore the sweet tones of this ancient instrument while dazzling us with some of the 18th century's most virtuoso instrumental music. Monica will astonish us in turn with one of Vivaldi's most bravura violin concertos, Il Grosso Mogul.
