Hello friends,

A few quick items from me, roving reporter from the PRS board:

I know I promised a short concert by the recorder quartet, "King Kung" from Seattle at the start of this month's session.  Unfortunately, the group has had to postpone their trip here due to a death in the family of one of the quartet members.  We will eagerly await hearing their jumbo sized recorders (tenor, bass, great bass, contra bass) until the January session.

Thanks to all who participated in the instrument swap last month.  It was low key and fun, and there were a few things that found PERFECT new homes!!

One last thing....Many of you know I play with a baroque chamber music ensemble named La Stella.  We have a recital coming up on Sunday, Nov. 22nd, and I need to call your attention to a correction in the time of the concert.  It is 2pm, not 3pm as advertised earlier.  Please see the events listing below for further information.  Sorry for the confusion!

Thanks, and hope to see you soon!

Notes from our Music Director
vicki and child
Greetings everyone!

Winter has arrived, which also means the end of the year and the holiday season are rapidly approaching! Peter Seibert will be the guest conductor in December, so this will be my last session with you before the new year. Hope to see all of you there.

For our November session, I would like to focus on English renaissance music
by Peter Phillips. We will start with a beautiful 5 part motet called "O Beatum et Sacrosanctum Diem" and then move on to his fabulous 6 part Pavan Passamezzo "Deo Gratias".  Philips was one of the most prolific Northern composers of Latin sacred choral music, yet he also composed music for instrumental consort and keyboard. There are several hundred surviving motets from his hand, of which O Beatum is one.  Philips' instrumental pieces included the best-known genres of English instrumental music of the time, the fantasia, pavan & galliard. These two pieces will give you a sample of his multi faceted compositional talents. His vocal and instrumental writing is extremely smooth and elegant; a joy to play.  We will end the session with Andrew Charlton's "Royal Flush" written in 1992, dedicated to the Plumbers Union of Edmonton, Alberta!  (Some of you may remember that we did his "Pipe Dreams" last year). A fun, swingin' piece.

All sizes of recorders from Soprano down to Bass will be needed, and all buzzies, viols and other stringed instruments welcome. Contrabasses welcome, but we won't need C basses this session.

I am delighted that there is so much enthusiasm in the group, but I would like to remind everyone to be respectful of rehearsal etiquette, which includes the following:

- Arrive early enough to have your instruments unpacked and ready to play by the start time, which is 7:30.
- Once the session has started, please practice silently rather than noodle loudly if there are some tricky measures you need to review.
-  Please do not talk when the conductor is speaking, or trying to rehearse another section.
- Finally, try to be patient during the passing out of music; we will make sure you have something to play!

One last request...we'd like a volunteer to write a review about each playing session so that we can print it in the following month's newsletter. This is a wonderful way for members who were were not able to attend to still feel connected. The review should recap what we played, who the new members or guests were, any interesting musical tips thrown out by the director, and be written in your own unique style.  Jeanne Lynch came up with the name of the column, "Clef Notes".  Please let Zoe (pdxrecorders@comcast.net) know if this is something up your alley.

Ok, just one more thing...

Don't forget to mark your calendars for the 2nd annual Columbia Gorge Early Music Retreat April 2 - 5, 2010!  Tell a friend!
