Just a Brief Note...
...to thank you all for your enthusiastic participation this year!  From the last minute surprise of playing swing tunes with Bryce Peltier in September, to the joy of discovering new music at Menucha in March, and now the promise of 3 fun Portland Parkways events this summer...it has been a GREAT year!

Just to wet your whiskers for next season, I'm really pleased to announce that we will be bringing Glen Shannon back to Oregon to conduct the February 2010 playing session.  I think everyone enjoyed playing his compositions at Menucha, and I know he will have some fun ideas for the big group of us.  He will also be offering private lessons and ensemble coaching later that weekend.

Please come to support your friends this Friday at the Member's Night concert, 7:30pm, Kennedy School Community room as usual.  If you are inspired to perform at the last minute, please let me know -  there is room for you on the program!  Bring a potluck dessert dish to share.  PRS will supply the sparkling cider (and the stronger stuff isn't far away).

This formal newsletter will be on hiatus over the summer, but I'll continue to send out separate announcements for events that you might be interested in.

I wish you a wonderful summer, filled with sunshine, music, friends, a bit of practicing and a lot of joy!
Zoe
Upcoming Playing Sessions
June 19, 2009, Member's Night Extravaganza
Summer break: See you September 18th - Vicki Boeckman conducts
June Member's Night Extravaganza and Dessert Potluck!

Reserve the third Friday in June on your calendars and start rehearsing now!!  As an alternative to hearing your small ensembles play during each monthly session, we have planned a whole evening of music featuring...YOU!  The setting is designed to be a supportive, low-key atmosphere for ANYONE who wants to perform in front of people, no matter what your experience level.  All instruments are welcome, as many recorder players are talented on other instruments as well!  Bring a potluck dessert dish, bring supportive friends and family and plan to participate!  If you have a newly formed ensemble and want coaching prior to the performance, please contact any of our esteemed conductors, as listed in the sidebar.  If you would like to form a new ensemble, a classified ad in this newsletter can help find other members, or you are welcome to make an announcement at the next PRS session.  Please contact Zoe Tokar at pdxrecorders@comcast.net as soon as possible so we will have an idea of the number of groups.
Should be a fun evening!

Portland Sunday Parkways
Sunday Parkways
by Ellen Mendoza

How do biking and recorders go together?  Great, at the Sunday Parkways, where the City of Portland will close off miles of streets for a Sunday each summer month for biking and strolling and the newly formed Portland Recorder Orchestra will serenade the passersby!  We want you to be part of a Mighty Wind blowing sweet old tunes to the crowd!  Click HERE for more info from City of Portland.

The first date will be June 21, 2009, and the orchestra is booked for Peninsula Park, 1:30 to 2:30 PM.  There will be a covered space with chairs.  The next two dates are July 19 and August 16, time and place to be determined.  We have arranged a rehearsal for June 10, at 7pm at the Community Music Center, 3350 SE Francis, in the basement.  Because there are student recitals going on, we will need to respect the nervous anxiety of the students and tiptoe down to the basement.

Ellen Mendoza had the inspiration for this gig and is the main contact.  Call her in the evening at 503 239-1974 or email her anytime at: ellenmendoza_lido@yahoo.com.  Even if you can't come to play on June 21st, if you can make one of the other dates, feel free to come to the first rehearsal.  The plan is to have a rehearsal before each date but to keep the music about the same.  Double reeds and all skill levels welcome.  Phil Neumann will help us with music selection, but this is a cooperative enterprise.  The more the merrier!
