Hello all,

Remember, there is no playing session this month at the Kennedy School.  Check out the article below for information about the faculty concert happening at the Gorge Retreat.  You are welcome to come, even if you're not a retreat participant.

Did you know March is PLAY THE RECORDER month??  Last year, the PRS celebrated with a concert of recorder ensembles at the Holladay Park Plaza Retirement Center.  This year, the Columbia Gorge Retreat is the place to be!  Every year, the American Recorder Society chooses a newly composed piece of recorder music to mark this event and encourages chapters all over the country to play it on the same day/weekend/month.  The piece this year is called "Thank You, ARS" to honor the 70th anniversary of the national organization.  Here is a link to the SHEET MUSIC and even a MIDI recording to help with hearing the swing rhythm.  Play it with friends and have fun!

During the month of March, NEW memberships to ARS (or old memberships that have lapsed more than 2 years) are $35, instead of $45.  Join now - become a member of our "parent" organization and receive the magazine, "American Recorder", as well as discounts to workshops, scholarship opportunities, and a larger sense of the world-wide recorder community.

Cheers,
Zoe

From Eileen Hadidian
Dear PRS friends,

EileenMany of you know by now that I'm in another set of rapids in the cancer journey. The MRI showed that  there are new lesions in the vertebrae, and I just finished another course of radiation. Radiation to the spine (or any area which is similarly fraught with nerves) can be pretty rough, and it will take a while to recover from the side effects.

I am so sorry I won't be able to teach the Columbia Gorge workshop. I am not the kind of person to back away from commitments,  but these are extraordinary circumstances. Please know that all of you in the PRS chapter are very precious to me, since Vicki and I, along with all you wonderful PRS members, helped "midwife" the chapter into being, and I hope to see you all again once this hurdle is past.

I have asked for the help of my community to get the energy flowing again and to regain my warrior spirit. This journey will require very strong spiritual medicine. If you have a spiritual practice, please add me to your meditation or prayers. Otherwise, please send me healing thoughts and positive intention.

 With love and gratitude,

Eileen

  Thank You Volunteers!
Thank you to all who signed up to bring snacks for enjoyment after our playing sessions.  BIG thanks to board members Robin Teitzel, Susan Campbell and Zoe Tokar for bringing snacks in February.  And just a friendly reminder to Bruce and Gwyneth Van Buskirk and Bee Neufeld - you're on for April 17th. Simple and healthy is ideal:  juice, fruit, crackers, cheese, etc.

June Member's Night Extravaganza!
recorder trio
Reserve the third Friday in June on your calendars and start rehearsing now!!  As an alternative to hearing your small ensembles play during each monthly session, we have planned a whole evening of music featuring...YOU!  The setting is designed to be a supportive, low-key atmosphere for ANYONE who wants to perform in front of people, no matter what your experience level.  All instruments are welcome, as many recorder players are talented on other instruments as well!  Bring a potluck dessert dish, bring supportive friends and family and plan to participate!  If you have a newly formed ensemble and want coaching prior to the performance, please contact any of our esteemed conductors, as listed above.  If you would like to form a new ensemble, a classified ad in this newsletter can help find other members, or you are welcome to make an announcement at the next PRS session.  Please contact Zoe Tokar as soon as possible so we will have an idea of the number of groups.
Should be a fun evening!

Vicki Boeckman performing in two fantastic musical events during the month of March, right here in Portland!

Vicki will be playing with Portland Baroque Orchestra as they collaborate for the first time with Portland Opera in the production of Francesco Cavalli's La Calisto.  This baroque opera, a wacky tale of gods and mortals embroiled in mixed-up love affairs and mischief making, promises a lively and fun-filled evening.  It will be performed in the intimacy of the Newmark Theater on March 13, 15, 19, 21.  For more details and to order tickets, go to http://www.portlandopera.org/operas/2008-2009/la-calisto

Vicki will be making her debut as a soloist with the Portland Baroque Orchestra on March 20 and 22 in an exciting performance entitled Italy's Seicento: The Birth of Melody.  The orchestra will be featuring 17th century dances, songs and sonatas by Giovanni Gabrieli, Giovanni Battista Buonamente and Biagio Marini.  Feast your eyes and ears on the beautiful early string, brass and wind instruments, and the amazing music they and and their humans create!!  For more details and tickets, go to http://www.pbo.org/concerts.php
