Hello! This Friday I will be leading the PRS in 17th-century music dance music
from France and Germany. The theme of the program is The Big Picture
(or you can't get lost if you only have to count to 1).
Dance music of the 17th century often appears simple and
uncomplicated but is really filled with life, energy, and rhythmic
vitality, once we learn to see the Big Picture. In the big picture
we'll transform one phrase into one enormous slow beat, giving the
pieces a new musical freedom.
The French music will be ballet music from Marc-Antoine Charpentier's (1643-1704) music from his tragédie en musique David et Jonathas, 1688.
The German dance music will be one or two suites from Johann Hermann Schein's (1586-1630) Banchetto Musicale, 1617.
French baroque music is filled with just as much passion and
energy as any Italian, German, English, or Latvian composition. The
only difference is the more subtle delivery of the French musical
rhetoric. Schein's music let's us explore the transitional nature of
his dance music. The older dance forms, like the Paduoana and Galiarda,
are heard next to the more modern dances, the Courante and Allemande.
Each dance comes with its own personality and set of subtle rhythmic
complexities (but easy to count).
Looking forward to it! Kim Pineda --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Biographical information:

Message from our Music Director
|
Greetings everyone! Our next meeting on November 21st will mark the
official one year anniversary of PRS! I am proud to be part of such a
thriving and enthusiastic group.
I am also happy to turn the next playing session over to my very competent colleague, Kim Pineda. Kim and his family have recently moved to Eugene, so hopefully he will become a familiar face at PRS.
As with any anniversary, one tends to reflect and wonder. We look
back to see how far we have come, and we look ahead with new hopes,
energy and ideas.
Thanksgiving and the holiday season are rapidly approaching, and we
have a lot to be thankful for. Music making in this wonderful community
is one thing. Music heals and connects people. The gift of music is one that
never fades or goes out of style. Consider giving a PRS membership to a
friend, invite someone to an early music concert,
or offer to share the cost of an upcoming workshop with someone
less fortunate. Spread the word. Encourage friends or new
acquaintances to take up the recorder and help them get started.
Sing and play as if your life depended on it.
If music be the food of love, sing and play on! Vicki

Rehearsal Etiquette
|
Hi folks, Just thought I'd make a brief mention of this before we are introduced to our next guest conductor. While the energy and enthusiasm we bring to our Friday night sessions is absolutely wonderful, here are a few tips that may make our coach's job more pleasant as well as help ensure everyone has a good group experience.
Please show our coach and your neighbors the utmost respect by not talking while the coach is giving instructions. Refrain from "doodling" on your instrument while the coach is giving instructions. Tune when it is your turn, and be silent when others are tuning. Please do not wear strong perfume or cologne. Do not practice your part while music is being passed out. Prepare by looking it over for key signature, repeats, tricky rhythms, and finger the notes silently to yourself. Stop playing immediately when the coach cuts off, please do not finish whatever passage you were in the middle of. Position your music stand so you can see the coach over the top of your stand while reading the music. Bring a pencil. Come early, be in your seats warmed up and ready to play at 7:30. Watch, listen, and have fun! Much thanks, Zoe
