A Note from J
Dear Members, It is evident that our steam rooms once again failed. I realize that I have addressed this matter before and now it is "deja vu all over again". Ultimately the buck stops with me, but in life mistakes are made and we must do our best to overcome and correct those mistakes and move on. As most, if not all, of you know, these failures are not due to any cause or fault of Pura Vida; however, we are in the position to rectify this problem and compel those that are responsible to make the permanent repairs so our members will not be impacted again. I will not make excuses for those who are responsible, or for that matter, ourselves. What I will do is tell you that every step of the current repair has been designed, reviewed, and now inspected by a forensic engineer. This gives me more comfort as now there is a licensed professional whose integrity and reputation is on the line, in addition to the contractor whose responsibility it has been to make sure that the repairs were done to last. I have made it perfectly clear that this unacceptable and embarrassing condition has gone on long enough so the responsible parties are abundantly clear on what the impact will be should this repair not work. If there is good news in this equation, it is having the repairs done at night and that the hot weather does reduce the demand on the steam rooms. Even though this does not address the needs of those that use the steam rooms regardless of the outside temperatures, we have been assured that the repairs will be completed no later than July 31st, with the goal of completing them as close to mid July as possible. I cannot tell you how badly I feel about this and how frustrating this has been for all of us at Pura Vida. As we know in life, when things that we can and do control go wrong, we understand what must be done and advance accordingly. This circumstance was outside of our control and compelling the responsible parties to "do the right thing" and make the permanent repairs took months of exhaustive effort. All of us deeply appreciate your patience and understanding. We are grateful for your tolerance and bearing with us as the contractor and their group of professionals once and for all make the permanent repairs that they will stand by, so these important amenities can be returned to for your use and enjoyment ASAP. We strengthen our cores, stretch and align, and teach you how to breathe (amongst a million other cues you'll hear us throw out there). However, I recently came across a word that I had a hard time pronouncing and remembering, but important nonetheless. Shenpa. Shenpa's literal translation is attachment. It is the charge behind our emotions and thoughts and beyond our words. It's how we get hooked or stuck into habits. When we think of habits, we are used to routine, being familiar with what we are doing, having certain expectations of how things are supposed to be. Like exercise. If we don't sweat, we don't work out. If our body doesn't ache, we haven't done anything. If we try a new class, we might not like it. Where's the reward if we don't take the risk? Where's the opportunity to transform if we don't change? How do we move obstacles if we don't try new things? And what's my point? To try Pilates. We have amazing opportunities and ways to explore Pilates at Pura Vida as part of your membership. PurFit is incredibly unique for a Pilates studio. Described as a fast-paced, cardio-based workout on the 4th floor in the studio, you get to use the equipment hands-on in stations and a lot of movement in between. Tammy and Ann both teach challenging, yet doable classes. Yes, you can sweat, if you want, but also get to "do" Pilates. Pilates Mat Fusion isn't just laying around on the floor. You might use props like a BOSU ball or weights or bands or magic circles. Jonathan and Amanda have VERY different styles and variations of exercises that can be more challenging than using the equipment in the Pilates studio. Pilates Body is another opportunity to strengthen your core and stretch your limbs with variation in exercises and props. Similar to PurFit in nature, the classes will teach you Pilates principals with a bit of edge. Amanda, Tammy and Ann will mix it up every week, so you might not know what to expect.

DELICIOUS RECIPE FOR DINNER TONIGHT - PEA PESTO CROSTINI (modified from a Giada De Laurentiis recipe) A great lunch or a dinner starter; easy & delicious.
INGREDIENTS: 1 (10-ounce) package frozen peas, thawed 1 garlic clove 1/2 cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese 1 teaspoon salt, plus more to taste 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper, plus more to taste 1/3 cup olive oil 8 (1/2-inch-thick) slices whole-grain baguette 8 cherry tomatoes, halved, or 1 small tomato, diced FOR THE PEA PESTO: Pulse together in a food processor the peas, garlic, Parmesan cheese, salt and pepper. With the machine running, slowly add 1/3 cup of the olive oil and continue to mix until well combined, 1 to 2 minutes. Season with more salt and pepper, if needed. Transfer to a small bowl and set aside. FOR THE CROSTINI: Toast or grill Transfer the bread to a platter and spread 1 to 2 tablespoons pesto on each slice. Top each crostini with 2 tomato halves and serve.

SPORTS MASSAGE - The Athlete's Edge
Colleen Casey, Registered Massage Therapist As an active person or "athlete", you look for an edge that can help you overcome injuries quickly, perform better and train more effectively. Sports Massage is that edge - it can help you sustain higher levels of performance, remain free of injuries and keep your entire body healthier, when received on a regular basis.
Sports massage differs from Swedish massage in that the goal is not only relaxation, but pain relief, decreased muscle tension and injury prevention and treatment. Deeper, specific pressure is used, however open communication ensures that the pressure is appropriate and effective.
After training or an athletic event, muscles become constricted and shortened. Very small tears occur in muscle fibers which can lead to swelling and forming of adhesions. Without proper rest, stretching and massage, muscles can become increasingly fatigued, contracted and inflexible. Massage helps heal the muscle fibers by stimulating blood circulation which more effectively brings nutrients to the muscle tissues and carries waste away. Massage also broadens muscle fibers for increased flexibility.
