VIVOBAREFOOT

 vivobarefoot

We've selected Terra Plana and their VIVOBAREFOOT line as our exclusive minimalist shoe provider.

We support the Barefoot Movement and feel that it can provide benefits to many. However, it's important to acknowledge your transition from a traditional shoe to a minimalist shoe/barefoot training. Removing the heel rise in your shoe will affect your gait.  Increasing your activity in these shoes conservatively and including foot strengthening exercises in your regime is key to having a successful transition.

Barefoot and minimalist shoe training can strengthen your feet and recruit additional muscle fibers throughout the lower leg, improve stability and mobility throughout your ankle joint, increase your proprioceptive feedback, encourage a more natural gait and overall movement.

We excited to release new styles and colors in the Fall. Stay tuned!

A MESSAGE FROM KEITH

keith moore

The average American gains between 7-12 pounds between Halloween and New Year's. With Thanksgiving upon us (where it's not uncommon for a meal to have 3,500 calories) we are officially in the holiday season. It can also be a very stressful time of year. I thought I might make some suggestions in how Pura Vida can help.

1) Do not wait until New Year's day to make a resolution of better health. It is common for many of us to postpone a serious fitness regimen during the holiday season with a plan to start in earnest on January 1. Although the "new year's resolution" scenario is often effective for many, committing to a plan in November gives you a two month jump-start and creates a mind-set for the holidays that is healthy and well-planned. Increase your visits to the club (or at the very least stick to your schedule) and try classes and programs that are new to you. Inspire yourself! Speak with our fitness department about a personal training "tune up" to get you motivated and a plan established early on. We have the most respected and talented team of trainers in Denver.

2) Nutrition, nutrition, nutrition! I have to assume that most of us here at Pura Vida are fairly savvy when it comes to what we should eat and what we should not eat. (I see many of you in the veggie department at Whole Foods!) however, if you're like me, when the holidays roll around each year, the temptation is high and its entirely too easy to fall off the healthy eating wagon. Do not allow yourself to get into the "all of nothing" mentality with food - the "I already blew it" binge that lasts until January 1. Sara Kosick, Pura Vida Holistic Nutritionist, is an amazing resource and someone that I feel every member should meet. Her knowledge of nutrition and nutrient-rich eating is vast, and the results our member's see (and more importantly feel) is a testament to the importance of eating right. Ask for a consultation with Sara before the holidays start.

3) Clear your head, or at least fill it with the right thoughts. The holidays are stressful. I wish this wasn't so, but if you're like me, between Thanksgiving and the first of the year, the pressure to insure that the holidays are perfect for family and friends is intense. Stress levels escalate this time of year and it's no wonder why. Take some time for yourself at the club and try Qi Gong, yoga or meditation. These classes are designed to relieve everyday stress and to make it possible to look inward and to "check in" with yourself through this hectic time of year. Manage your stress with exercise. Take time for yourself. Visit the club and give yourself a gift in the form of a visit to the spa. There is a reason national magazines write about SPAVital! (I highly recommend the 80 minute detoxifying seaweed wrap...sublime! ...and it's a special this month). Compliment yourself! Pat yourself on the back and say "I made it to the club today. That's an awesome thing and I'm proud of myself".

4) Work out with friends. Support systems are important in achieving goals. Whether it be eating right or sticking to a fitness plan. Involve your friends. Share with them your goals. Even better, bring them to the club with you and share your Pura Vida. We will be running a referral program this month. It's a great time to invite a friend. If they decide to join, you receive a month of dues on us and your friend receives a spa treatment. Take advantage of this referral program and get healthy together.

5) Be thankful. Let's face it, these are not easy times we are living in. Things in the world feel a little upside down, and they have for some time. Although many might call Pura Vida a gym, I call it a club. A sanctuary. We are fortunate as a group to have common goals, dreams and ideals. I suppose that might sound presumptuous. I hope not. Take a moment to reflect and be thankful for what you have. I get daily inspiration from so many of our members that I am thankful on a daily basis. I'm inspired by the thought of Pura Vida, and by each of you who have chosen to live life to its fullest with us.

Happy Thanksgiving,

TRAINER TALK with Master Trainer Tim Harris

tim harris

Speaking with many of the members recently, there seems to be mixed feelings on the temperature change that is about to happen. The snow sport athletes are anxious to get moving out there and the people who dread the snow are grimacing about the weather to come. Either way this is a great opportunity to change your workouts.

Many of you who are active outside during the summer months, most commonly incorporate a lot of aerobic exercise. When the seasons change, we see you alpine skiing, which is actually anaerobic dominated. Now is the time to start adding in anaerobic and lactic acid work to prep for the energy systems that dominate downhill. For those looking for high aerobic demand, activities such as Nordic skiing or snowshoeing are best fits. You will have the cardiovascular capacity, but the amount of work, weight, and inefficiency of these activities will call for more muscular strength with endurance. Start changing your resistance work to better prepare for these new demands. For the others that prefer indoor activities, use this season change as an opportunity. Make some alterations in your program and routine. New classes, true strength training, high intensity circuits, more yoga - whatever it is, get out of your comfort zone and make a change.

PILATES SPOTLIGHT - Jonathan Oldham

jonathan oldhamRon Fletcher and Pilates Center of Boulder Certified Pilates Instructor
Licensed Physical Therapist

I once heard that one teaches what one needs to learn. As an instructor I continually learn to breathe and move more freely in my teaching and learn a great deal from my clientele not just about movement, but about life. I enjoy the connection with others teaching Pilates provides, and this is the main reason I keep teaching.

When someone comes into a studio and says they want to work their core, I ask them to define it and ask what they expect to feel in working their core. Although there are no wrong answers, the term "core" has become very broad, and I want to incorporate their definition of core and expand that definition for them.

I think I have a unique style of rhythm in my teaching. I recognize the importance of humor and keeping it light and strive to meet each individual where they are on a particular day. I like to develop Pilates programs for individuals, especially with special needs and take all aspects of the individual - physical, mental, emotional, cultural, and spiritual - into account. I keep in mind that Joe Pilates called his method Mind Body Contrology. To me this implies that the Pilates method is a system of movement that is mindful and precise and develops awareness as well as strength. I have also been trained in the Ron Fletcher work which is a specialized branch of the Pilates method.

I personally got into Pilates after finishing a four-year stint skating with Ice Capades and was not sure of my next step in life. On a whim, and not knowing anything about Pilates, I went to a mat class taught by Amy Alpers and Rachel Segal owners of the Pilates Center in 1991. Although I had heard about it from a Rolfer in Boulder and was also admonished by my ballet teacher that I should do some Pilates, it was during the class that I realized I wanted to learn the work. Rachel and Amy were just starting their training program then, so I enrolled. I finished in the first graduating class at the Pilates Center in 1992. I went on to work at the Pilates Center for the next 10 years and have been teaching in a variety of settings ever since.

As an active person, I do it all! I enjoy running, spinning, biking, figure skating, weight training, cardio and of course Pilates! My favorite exercise is the long stretch series on the reformer.

THANKSGIVING DINNER: Is it time for a makeover?

thanksgiving dinnerThanksgiving dinner doesn't have to be associated with overeating, bloating, exhaustion, and the feeling of "I'm never eating turkey again"!  It was most likely not the turkey, the sweet potato, or the green beans that have caused this negative connotation we have with Thanksgiving dinner. Why not give this menu a makeover and make your Thanksgiving dinner one that nourishes your body, instead of one that weighs you down? Making a few small changes to this meal can make a world of difference to your digestive, endocrine, and liver systems. Consider the following:

  • Buy an organic turkey
  • Opt for no stuffing; instead try a quinoa salad
  • Leave out the bread; whole grain or not, it's just a filler
  • Make your own pumpkin pie; lowering the sugar content and using whole food ingredients
  • Include a large mixed green salad
  • Pass on the white mashed potatoes; mashed sweet potatoes are amazing
  • please skip the marshmallow and brown sugar topping!

The holiday season has arrived, yet this is no reason to ignore what you know about healthy, clean eating!

Happy Cooking,

Sara Kosick, CPT, NTP
