Agota Aczel
Zumba Instructor
Team Member of the Month

Experience/Current Course Of Study: Pursued my interest in physical rehabilitation and earned a Master's Degree in Physical Therapy from the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center. Prior to, graduated with a B.S. in Biology from University of Colorado at Denver. Renewed my interest in physical fitness when I discovered Zumba. Took the first of many Zumba instructor trainings in March of 2008 with Beto Perez and licensed to teach most Zumba formats, including Zumba Toning, Zumbatomic, and Zumba Gold. I take workshops every year to learn and share the latest and best Zumba Fitness has to offer. I am an AFAA certified group fitness instructor.

First Job: Worked as an administrative assistant for an AV company in Hungary.

Wellness Philosophy:

Do what you love, and love what you do in all aspects of life including wellness. Exercise should be FUN and challenging at the same time. It's something that gets you hooked, leaves you energized, happy, and you can't wait to come back for more, because you enjoy it so much. Give yourself permission to express yourself. Don't be afraid to add a little spice and excitement to your life, like you do in a Zumba class. Take time out of every day for yourself to be in the moment, stay open, and let go of anything that prevents you from reaching your full potential. If you lead your life with passion and heart, you don't have a choice but to be happy and healthy.

Childhood Ambition:  Becoming a kindergarten teacher or a nurse.

Proudest Accomplishment:  Left everything behind in Hungary - my home country - to build a new life from scratch in the U.S., learning a new language and earning two college degrees with honors. After 16 years, I am proud to call myself a US citizen, which is a dream come true. I feel privileged and grateful to live the American dream.

Indulgence: Dark chocolate, chocolate desserts, pizza, a great burger or steak.

Inspiration: My clients who make the commitment to their health, changing their lifestyle and succeed in reaching their goals. My peers who are dedicated and top of their field being passionate and excited about what they do. It's contagious!  Beto Perez, the creator of Zumba who is changing the face of fitness all over the world and reaching millions who haven't been able to commit to any other exercise program before. What an accomplishment for someone who   had nothing when coming to this country. But he had a vision and a dream which is now in the making for 10 years. Truly amazing!

A MESSAGE FROM KEITH
keith

Last week a report was released though numerous media sources showing that junk food could destroy brain cells responsible for controlling body weight.

In the study researchers fed rats what they described as a "typical high-fat American diet" and found they had doubled their calorie intake three days later.

The rats also showed inflammation in the hypothalamus, the part of the brain containing neurons controlling body weight. The inflammation stopped a few days later but then recurred after four weeks.

The lead researcher said scientists also detected a healing response to brain injury called gliosis, which is "thought to be the brain equivalent of wound healing and is typically seen in conditions of neuronal injury, such as stroke and multiple sclerosis." The researcher, Dr. Joshua Thaler of the Diabetes and Obesity Center of Excellence at the University of Washington in Seattle, added, "We speculate that the early gliosis that we saw may be a protective response that fails over time. We also detected damage to, and eventual loss of, critical weight-regulating neurons." "The possibility that brain injury may be a consequence of the over-consumption of a typical American diet offers a new explanation for why sustained weight loss is so difficult for most obese individuals to achieve."

In essence, the article and study was suggesting that a poor diet can cause brain damage. Both astounding and frightening...and utterly believable. I am certainly not a scientist, but this type of information made me stop and think about what I eat throughout the day.  Findings? I could do better. Most likely all of us can.

Pura Vida began its Holistic Nutrition Department, led by Sara Kosick, a couple of years back. Sara is a graduate of the Nutrition Therapy Institute and is certified in functional blood chemistry analysis. She knows her stuff and is passionate about it. The goal of the department was total body wellness through whole organic foods. Generally speaking, nutritionists and dieticians struggle within a health club environment, which frankly has always been odd to me. Overall health begins with diet, and to truly perform at your best level (and look and feel your best) it is necessary to eat what's right for your specific system.

Sara discussed Bio Individuality: "The concept of bio-individuality is that each person has his or her own food and lifestyle needs. Similar to the concept of "holistic", dietary generalizations typically do not fit your specific needs. When experts say, "dairy is good for you" or "fat is unhealthy", it doesn't apply to every person or every situation; there are many more variables involved. One person's food is another person's poison, and that's why fad diets tend to fail in the long run. Working on the principal of bio-individuality, we'll support you in making positive changes that are based on your unique needs."

Sara's knowledge has created a nutrition department that is phenomenally successful.  In order to keep up with clients requests, Lisa Groves was asked to join our team earlier this year. Lisa comes to us as a graduate of the Institute of Integrative Nutrition as well as the Nutrition Therapy Institute. Her expertise and experience is substantial and I am happy to have Lisa working with us and working with you the member.

lisa and sara

Although it is unlikely that many of our members eat fast food, the recent discoveries into nutrition and brain health make me thankful, again, for having a staff who are experts in their chosen fields and the best of the best. If you haven't met with either Sara or Lisa for a consultation, I urge you to do so. Our goal at Pura Vida is overall mind and body health. Nutrition is the foundation and a place to start even before stepping a foot on the fitness floor.

Bon Appetit and Happy Independence Day!

TRAINER TALK with Master Trainer Tim Harris

tim harris

Previously, we discussed the ability to manage our training regime like that of a professional athlete - to ensure we are operating near full capacity (on most days) throughout our lives.

To achieve this, four realms of development will be discussed: Physical, Emotional, Mental, and Spiritual. Mental will be covered this month.

Instead of aiming to increase our mental capacity by increasing our knowledge, we're going to look at enhancing your focus, time management and positive critical thinking skills. The better our focus, the better our work output and quality. Any break in focus takes away from the energy needed to complete the task. Committing to intentional breaks in order to oscillate between left brain and right brain activity can give us the necessary recovery to come back with an increased focus.

A good example of this is when a solution or idea can comes to you while working out, driving, or just in the shower. Try taking time every 90-120 minutes during a hectic day to intentionally meditate. It doesn't have to be spiritual. Just counting breathes or repeating a positive word/phrase with each breath for 10-15 minutes. It has been shown that people who meditate regularly need less sleep. This effort can increase your available hours of productivity per day.

Making time for the things that we enjoy can be hard for many compulsive workers. These breaks to take a golf lesson/to spend time with family and friends/to meditation or exercise - will rejuvenate our focus and help us to enjoy our lives, and not just routinely repeat each day. Also, taking time to create rituals that include positive thinking reinforcement will help you get into a better working routine. Many athletes use this technique. Pro golfers are known for their pre-shot rituals. Some will visualize every shot they are about to take will drop in the hole. This isn't even possible, but it creates an atmosphere of optimism that prevents any negative thoughts. This can be a powerful tool in the work place.

For more information, additional training tips, or a suggestion for a future topic, please contact Tim at timh@puravidaclub.com.

RED ROCKS FITNESS CHALLENGE

fitness challengePura Vida - Exclusive Health Club Sponsor

The HeathONE Red Rocks 90 Day Fitness Challenge wrapped up last weekend. I can't believe it has been 12 weeks since the start of this ride...and what a ride it has been. I can confidently say that my team and I will never look at Red Rocks the same way again. This experience has been the most emotionally rewarding opportunity that I have had in my fitness career thus far. Looking back at the pre-assessments, I can't believe I am dealing with the same team that started this challenge with 12 weeks ago. I was handed a group that had little fitness experience, many extra pounds to shed, poor eating and lifestyle habits, and little motivation. Over the 90 days, I helped push this group to their limits, re-shaping minds and bodies with confidence, and empowering my team to believe that their lives could be different with just a little guidance. My team started this challenge barely able to make it to the top of the bleachers, and just last weekend, they floated up those same bleachers 6 times in addition to a muscular endurance workout! There have been so many success stories on my team and I am so proud to say that every single one of them stands a little taller and shines a little brighter than they did on day one.

I can't talk about this challenge without mentioning the success story of the one participant - the amazing Roland Green has lost 21lbs since the start of the challenge, has never missed a workout, comes to Pura Vida every Tuesday to join me in my 10am Indoor Cycling class, completes most all of his homework assignments, and his lifestyle and outlook on movement has done a complete 180. Here is a little exerpt from an email that Roland shared with me regarding his "pre" and "current/post" challenge life!

"Pre-challenge me: I never had an exercise routine, never had a gym membership, most of my exercise was skiing or hiking with my dogs. Skiing has become too expensive and my dogs have gotten OLD! Since I started my MBA program and my activity level decreased significantly - I always felt lethargic. All of a sudden I was over 200 lbs! Now (& going forward!): I have no problems getting out of bed in the morning (I have to give some credit to my new dog, who I have to take for a long walk every morning before work). I have a lot more energy and have noticed a greater level of focus when it comes to schoolwork. I also get antsy when I'm just sitting around, I always feel like I need to be moving around. I try to take even the smallest opportunities to get some exercise in (i.e. running up stairs, or stretching at work)."

Thank you HealthONE and Red Rocks, Thank you Pura Vida, and a BIG, BIG thank you to my Amazing Team 5 participants!

PILATES STAFF SPOTLIGHT: AMANDA FLETCHER

Amanda FletcherStott Certified Pilates Instructor

"When clients come into the studio and tell me they want to work their core, I tell them they are in the right place!

I became interested in Pilates years ago through physical therapy post knee surgery. Pilates did more than rehabilitate my knee. I found that by strengthening and developing my core, I was able to do all of the physical activities that I love to do better. In a nutshell, to me, Pilates means strength and balance. Besides Pilates, I also enjoy Kinesis, yoga, hiking and biking.

Pilates taught me how to move all of my joints properly, which created more agility, strength, balance, flexibility and power in all movement, which was something I wanted to teach to other people. I love to motivate others in their health and fitness. I also teach instructor certification courses for Stott Pilates and enjoy helping my students learn and build their careers.

I like keeping my workouts fun, fresh, and dynamic. The hour passes quickly! I am truly interested in helping clients recover from or prevent injury, sport specific, athletic workouts, and pre/postnatal. Although not a favorite of many clients, I love TEASER!"

HOLISTIC NUTRITION

SUMMER OF 'D'

sara kosick

If you've picked up a Men's Health, Time Magazine, Runner's World, or seen the Today Show in the last year, you've probably read/heard something about the importance of vitamin D. Living in Colorado, I had always assumed I got plenty of vitamin D. I'm out in the sun all the time and I must be converting and absorbing my RDA of 400IU's per day, right? Wrong!

It's not that simple. Vitamin D does not magically absorb into your body by getting 15 minutes of sunlight 2x/week; first and foremost you must eat a healthy diet and practice a healthy lifestyle in order to reap the benefits. Not only that, your body must use the sun's ultraviolet rays to transform a cholesterol compound in the skin into the precursor for usable vitamin D. Once available, it must be absorbed and processed by the liver with the help of calcium. This could pose a few problems if you have intestinal disorders (food intolerance, ulcers, infection), or liver malfunction, which I learned through my Functional Nutrition practice, was exactly my reasoning for inadequate vitamin D. With a little change to my diet, and supplementation of vitamin D, I have not only brought my vitamin D levels back to functional range, but I have improved my immune response, my ability to increase muscle strength, increased my bone strength, and reduced my chances of breast cancer! So how do you know if you're getting enough? A simple test will tell us if you are in need of supplementation. Vitamin D is a fat soluble vitamin, thus can be extremely toxic if taken in high doses or if taken when it is not needed. Find out what your body needs and schedule your Functional Nutrition or Holistic Nutrition session today.
