A MESSAGE FROM KEITH
I write this month's letter sitting on a lanai overlooking the Wailea beach in Maui. Sounds fantastic, doesn't it? For the most part it is indeed paradise and I am fortunate that I was able to take some time away from the club to recharge and refocus. By stepping away from the daily operations, I have gained insight into what I feel Pura Vida is doing right, and conversely what I feel Pura Vida can do better. This trip away has truly been an eye-opener for me. There has yet to be one instance of great service (or poor service) good decisions or bad decisions that I have not somehow related back to Pura Vida. Let's just say that this is the first vacation that I have been unable to step-away without reflecting on my job. But that is okay! No "woe is me" here... I look at this as an experience that has given me insight into you, the member, and a fortunate and thankful way of seeing with a new set of eyes. I won't bore you with the minute details of the daily happenings when I said, ad naseum, "we do that better" (my traveling partner surely will rank this as one of the most aggravating vacations on record due to my constant comparisons of Pura Vida and SPAVital to literally every experience had). But...here is the thing - a vacation functions in the realm of hospitality and service, and as I look at the operations of Pura Vida, so do we. There is very little difference when it comes down to it. I am infinitely lucky to have managers who run their specific area of the club with aplomb, professionalism and service. They do a damn good job insuring that members receive treatment that is above and beyond a typical health club. I am thankful for that. I am also thankful that all of the departments of the club tie-in to an overall essence and tone of caring for each member that is unheard of in this industry. They are leaders in their field and I believe if you have spent any time with them, you would agree that the heartbeat and soul of the club flows freely on all four floors. Back to hospitality: our goal and raisin d'ętre is to make you feel welcome when you arrive, to thank you as you leave, to create friendships while you are at the club and to ultimately, and most importantly, change lives through health and wellness. I feel strongly we do this, however we do not do this alone. Without you as a member, we have very little to share and explore. We have ideas that are not fully incubated and we have what cannot be considered a club. My background with ClubCorp taught me hospitality. When I moved into fitness, I saw an opportunity to test common decency with exceptional service as a way to move the fitness industry forward. Hire the professionals who passionately know how to create fitness programs that are exceptional and results driven, find a spa director who intuitively understands the spa world, find a membership sales director who has never had the unfortunate training of selling fitness memberships (bad habits and not the PV style) and look for a desk manager who is interested in people and what makes them happy. From top to bottom our club...your club...works hard to insure that hospitality, a welcoming atmosphere with an incredible group of people who believe in helping all that walk through the door, is what Pura Vida is about. Then the sun sets and although this is my last evening here, I'm ready to get back to work. We have a sensational summer ahead of us. I thank you individually for contributing to our community. PS. I want to congratulate Pura Vida Membership Director Juliet Dawkins and her husband Jason on the birth of beautiful Lucia Elizabeth Dawkins. Baby and family are doing well. Also, a fond farewell to Mollie Anderson who has been with Pura Vida as Controller since opening. Mollie will be leaving to become a full-time mom. We will miss you! PERSONAL TRAINING
WELCOME CRISTINA LUBINI to the Personal Training Team

Physical Education - Exercise Science Emphasis Certifications: ACE Certified Personal Trainer ACE Lifestyle and Weight Management Coach Area of Expertise: Weight Loss, Lifestyle Improvement Enjoy three 60-minute sessions for only $199 with Cristina. TRAINER TALK with Master Trainer Tim Harris
Previously, we discussed the ability to treat our training regimen like that of a professional athlete. With your training, you should feel that you are operating near full capacity, most days. To achieve this, four realms of development will be discussed: Spiritual, Mental, Emotional, and Physical.
To have a successful life, we must be able to output the energy required. When we run low on energy, our ability to produce work or to concentrate diminishes. To build up this capacity, physical exercise is recommended. During weight training, we break down our muscles. With adequate rest (48-72 hours) we are able to repair and make these fibers stronger. Without rest, increased damage and injury may happen. On the other side, if we do not stress our muscles, atrophy takes place leaving our bodies at a frail state that is unable to produce quantities of work and open to injury. Both of these scenarios have the similarity of being linear and never changing. The body needs stress, but more important, it needs recovery. Athletes are controlled in this way. They are given work to do and then prescribed rest to be able to perform maximally. Majority of the work force operate in a very linear way. Pushing hard mentally and emotional, while doing very little in the physical department. By doing physical work in a periodized, oscillating scheme, we are able to give the body the ability to have energy all day long. The physical stress not only improves our endurance but also give us an opportunity for mental and emotional recovery.
Exercise isn't the only thing needed for a great physical base; healthy sleep routine and proper individualized eating habits are crucial. By following some simple guidelines of going to bed at the same time every night, getting 6-8 hours of sleep, avoiding alcohol 2-3 hours before bedtime, and no electronic devices an hour before bed, can help many achieve this. Also, the basic rules of eating lightly and often with lots of vegetables, whole grains, and protein can help.

PILATES
PILATES IN FITNESS

Cardio on Monday and Wednesday, weights Tuesday and Thursdays, yoga on Fridays and hopefully Sundays? Since you already have your workouts planned for everyday, how can you fit Pilates into your schedule? Easy. Pilates compliments every exercise and action that you do. Whether you are using the elliptical, stretching in a group exercise class, sitting at your desk, or lifting weights, you can do Pilates and incorporate the fundamentals into your everyday.
By focusing on your form and function, you'll use your breath more efficiently, increase your core stability, and reactivate muscles that might not have been working as efficiently as others with slower, smaller movements. You'll be that proud kid on the block with new shoes. You can jump higher, run faster, lift more weight, improve your golf score, increase your flexibility for your yoga practice. You CAN do it all.
Mat classes are a great way to start if you like group exercise. But don't be fooled, they aren't easy! Every exercise that you learn, you'll be able to adapt to the equipment in the Pilates studio and exercises that you do in the gym, just slow down!
MoVE classes are based on Pilates. They are a great way to learn a lot of moves on a piece of Pilates equipment, the chair. These exercises can also be adapted to your everyday workout... think about how you do sit-ups, lunges, planks...
Of course the Pilates studio is the best way to learn how to adapt exercises to your workout routine. We offer private and group lessons, where we can focus on form, ways to work around injuries and flexibility.
You'll feel longer and leaner in no time... and might just find that extra day or time to fit it all in.

| Ask Dr. James | |
with Dr. James Rouse
For either good or bad, my reputation for being a "kale pusher"
often proceeds me. I am relaxing my zealous stance for crucifers and sharing possibly a more enjoyable vehicle for vitality...red wine. With its dream team of antioxidant compounds-phenols, flavonoids, ergothionine and resveratrol, red wine may help protect arteries from inflammation, lower heart disease risk, help prevent strokes and heart attacks. New research suggests that red wine may also help with lowering the risk for dementia and may also extend life. One study found that people who drank a moderate amount of red wine were 40% less likely to get forgetful as they aged compared to teetotalers - while drinking hard liquor increased the risk for dementia. So which magical glass of red wonderfulness has the most polyphenol punch for my one glass daily? Pinot Noirs offer the higher polyphenol levels, followed by Egiodola, the Syrahs, the Cabernets Sauvignons and then the Merlots. Extra credit for uber-vitality when you pair your Pinot with sauted kale and wild salmon - enjoy! Dr. James Rouse is Chief Evangelist for Mix1 all natural protein drinks. mix1life.com |
Restaurant Insider
| |
with JEFF SUSKIN
What is the perfect addition to your shopping excursion or workout? Food of course! This Winter and Spring has seen a few notable Cherry Creek restaurant openings. Here is a quick rundown of a few we have tried and liked:
Sweet Ginger
2710 E 3rd Ave
303.996.7270
Located next door to Argyll Gastropub in the former Plush space, the original owners of Jason's Thai Asian Bistro & Sushi recently opened Sweet Ginger Asian Bistro and Sushi. Sweet Ginger's sushi has received solid reviews, they also have many traditional Thai dishes such as Pad Thai and Curry Bowls. Sweet Ginger also offers a solid sushi lunch special that gets you in and out for $10 (plus tax and drinks) and when i tried it they had a $1 sake special. As an added bonus, they also deliver.
Aria
250 Josephine Street
303.377.4012
dinearia.com
Although the location has seen a parade of restaurants come and go, Chef Michael Long may have finally put in place a concept with staying power in Cherry Creek. Chef Long of Opus Restaurant in Littleton has opened his newest creation Aria with a menu can best be described as inspired American cuisine. Long has always been associated with creative recipes and wine lists and Aria certainly supports this notion. It's casual but romantic and it has received solid reviews to date. Open for Lunch and Dinner.
Machete
2817 East Third Avenue
After 17 years, Cherry Creek bid farewell to Chez Jose. Former owner Dan Ohlson is now bringing tequilla and tacos to the old Q BBQ location on 3rd Ave. With a sizeable patio they are shooting for a Cinco de Mayo opening! Jose Avila, of Elway's Cherry Creek, will be helming the kitchen and bringing what he calls "real southern mexican food" to Denver. Ohlson is planning a tequilla list that will grow to hundreds of varieties over the next few months, which always makes shopping more fun!
Pura Vida member Jeff Suskin is the publisher of DiningOut Magazine, The Great Restaurants of Denver and Boulder, as well as 12 other editions in various cities around the United States.
