A MESSAGE FROM KEITH
The rhythm is going to get you... I missed the fitness industry convention this year in San Francisco. It is always an interesting time to get thousands of people together in one city and discuss the state of the industry, review and share ideas and to catch up on all things on the health and wellness front. As much as I enjoy the camaraderie of being around peers for a week, it is the trade show that I always find the most fascinating. Picture, if you will, an enormous convention center filled with every imaginable type of fitness equipment, device and class that is promoted as being "The next big thing!". From huge butterfly fans that attach to your arms while exercising, to pole dancing to a mechanical horse you ride while watching a video of the old west. (Seriously) It is astounding that our industry still aggressively tries to pull out a crystal ball and predict what will be the next "Spinning™" or "Bikram yoga™," but somewhat necessary. Starting from the inception of the fitness industry in the late '70s and early '80s, we have chased the next big thing. From Richard Simmons and Jane Fonda in the '80s to Susan Powter in the '90s ("Stop the Insanity!") to the body building craze of Arnold and the hilarity of Hanz and Franz, we have searched high and low for what ultimately would translate to a new trend and most importantly, a new member. Those of you not in the industry must, at times, think we are absolutely crazy! Ultimately what "sticks" and conversely what moves into the archives of nostalgia, is what works...what truly is functional and what proves to show results. I was thinking about this all week when, for whatever reason, I could not seem to get away from Zumba! On Entertainment Tonight, celebrities couldn't get enough of this class. On Blogs and websites, Zumba! continued to pop up. Reading member comment cards...Zumba! It's a phenomena and one that has had a slow burn for the last couple of years and all of a sudden...three alarm fire. The same has happened with Ballet Body, although more quietly. Our decision to install a ballet barre and create free classes was one of member requests and the realization that this isn't going away anytime soon. And best of all, it is a great workout. Pura Vida has always tried to maintain a balance of form and function...or: what's fun but also good for you. You will not see mechanical horses at the club anytime soon. The quality of cardio workout you get from a Zumba class is exceptional, but what drives the craze is the combination of a great cardio as well as an awakening of the soul. People leave the class smiling and lighter. Same with Ballet Body...and yoga and every one of our 120 plus classes at Pura Vida. Take the time to try some of the classes at the club that would not usually be on your list. Rowing, MoVe, Dirty Thirty...they are all implemented and put on the schedule with you in mind. Zumba...The "Latin dance party"? Me? You? Let's take this new season to step out of our comfort zone and work our spirit as much as we work our lungs. As silly as I might think I look trying to feel the rhythm, I'm certain that I'll be smiling. Something that hasn't happened with me and treadmill in quite some time. Happy Spring, Keith Keith Moore, General Manager

PERSONAL TRAINING
WELCOME REBECCAH HECKE TO THE PERSONAL TRAINING TEAM
Rebeccah is from Sao Paulo, Brasil and joins the Personal Training team as a Master Trainer with a BS in Exercise Physiology/ Exercise Science and is certified through NSCA, CSCS (Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist) and NSCA, CPT (Certified Personal Trainer) certifications.
Through an internship with NSCA, Rebeccah established a program with the USA Army Fort Carson Combatives Team and assisted in coaching US Army World Class Athlete Program Judo, Taekwondo, and Boxing athletes. She also served as an in-house strength and conditioning coach for fighters at Rough House, MMA.
"The heart of my training is teaching the body to be resistant to the forces set upon it and stable throughout any movement. With proper biomechanics, then, the body is able to correctly and efficiently move, produce power, and develop gains in conditioning, strength, agility, speed and control. I teach people to move in the right way, I don't just make them move. In this way, athletes and fighters become more resilient and less injury prone, they are able to produce power in a very efficient way, being less tired and more effective in competition. Those who are interested in bettering their conditioning will notice improvements in all aspects of their fitness. Through my program, they too, will be able to overcome issues such as lower back pain."

TRAINER TALK with Master Trainer Tim Harris
Before beginning my relationship with Pura Vida, I worked exclusively with athletes ranging from high school to professional level. On the professional level, it ranged from the obscure, racquetball and Australian rules football player to all of the big four sports and MMA athletes. Working with high-end athletes, much detail is given into how you develop, sustain, peak, and bring back down from their peak to a slightly higher base. What a lot of people don't understand is during much of an athletes training season, they are not training to total output.
It is said that for someone to be a master at their sport/skill, 10,000 hours of training must occur. Included in this is speed/strength development, sport specific development, and energy specific training. To avoid physical overtraining, mental imagery is included in this development. Hours not included in this preparation are efforts with regard to optimum nutrition and recovery. All of this prep goes toward one 12-15 minute fight bout or a full season where each game may be only 20-30 minutes of exertion. Much of the coaching technique is giving them a systematic, multi-level way of training. A very simplistic way of viewing this is off-season, pre-season, taper and in-season.
I bring this up for this point: Don't we all want to have the traits of a top athlete? Stability, health, alertness, flexibility, high amount of lean tissue, low fat, low fatigue, resistant to injury and the ability to bounce back from injuries?
I believe in huge benefits from training like an athlete, however, in a modified way. Our lives are built very differently in reference to when we need to be at peak performance. A normal, working person has to be "on" all the time. Mentally sharp, free of illness, able to handle the rigors of professional stress and personal stress and still put out the best product they can towards their job, family, and activities.
If you are looking for changes in many aspects of your life, step back and look at how you could be better training like an athlete - through rest, imagery, nutrition, varying workouts, professional development and tactic building.
Over the next four months, I will talk about traits that we need to pay attention to in order to operate at our highest state. We'll take a look at how our physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual needs must be met in order to get the most productivity out of our lives. Stay tuned.

PILATES
WHO DOES PILATES?
Professional athletes, seniors, men and women of all ages and physical backgrounds do Pilates. Pilates is for everyone of all ages, physical abilities and fitness levels. And the great thing is that a workout can be catered to individualized needs from anyone new to fitness to challenging workouts for competitive athletes to pregnant and post-partum women. Pilates helps with injury prevention and rehabilitation. WHAT IS PILATES? Most people think that Pilates is only about getting 6-pack abs. Fair enough, you do strengthen your abs, but, did you know that your core is about more than that? It is a low-impact, full-body strength and flexibility program that improves posture, balance and coordination, reduces stress, alleviates chronic pain and creates long, lean muscles without bulking up. Pilates' focus is on quality of movement rather than quantity, which makes you feel invigorated rather than exhausted after a session. Once you learn the fundamentals, you'll become more aware of posture and form and could essentially incorporate Pilates into anything that you do. Whether lifting weights, riding a bike, running and/or sitting at your desk. We have many programs to get you started. Whether you are in for one session to brush up on skills, want to do a series of lessons to join group lessons or have a focus and goal to meet.
Contact Stacy for more information at stacyw@puravidaclub.com Please also include info from Discovery Flyer PILATES DISCOVERY with Stacy Weinstein

April 18th - May 23rd Mondays at 6:30pm Learn the fundamental and foundational techniques of Pilates in the Discovery six-week program. You'll learn how to strengthen your core, improve your coordination, flexibility, agility and focus on body awareness you can take with you and incorporate in everything you do. Wear comfortable clothing, socks are optional, no shoes please.
This class is limited to a small group of six people.

TOXIC WORLD S ARA KOSICK, CPT, NTP
Did you know that there are upwards of 250,000 new toxins circulating through our air, water, and food supply since the 1950s? Not only can we be exposed to these toxins externally, but they can be generated internally as well via hormone overproduction and stress. Toxins block so many important pathways in our system like: cell enzyme processes, cell nutrient uptake, oxygen uptake, and cell excretion pathways, as well as stimulate inflammatory responses and infections. In short, toxins may be the cause of every symptom you're experiencing, from weight gain, to headaches, to bloating, to fatigue.
The typical argument against proper detoxification is that our body is well equipped to deal with and eliminate these toxins, therefore we should not worry about them. This would be true if we lived in the 1900s when pollution was less impactful, food was fresher, water was cleaner, and our lifestyles were MUCH less stressful. The truth is our liver doesn't recognize these new toxins and has no way to clear them. This is why healthy detoxification protocols like Pura Vida's Clean & Green Cleanse will help you feel healthier, stronger, obtain mental clarity, and maintain a healthy energy level. The warm weather is here and it's time to do some spring cleaning!

Lymph Drainage Massage (LDM) is a treatment using gentle rhythmic movements to aid in the recirculation of fluid by coordinating the contractions of the lymphatics. Having a proper functioning lymphatic system is crucial to our body's ability to drain stagnant fluids, detoxify, and regenerate tissues. This system also aids in filtering out toxins and foreign substances, and maintaining a healthy immune system. Surgery, fatigue, stress, edema and many other factors can hinder or stop good circulation. When this occurs, fluid and toxins accumulate and cellular functioning is significantly compromised.
Lymph drainage massage is a hands-on technique designed to attain and sustain proper function of the lymphatic system. By stimulating this system through massage, it works more efficiently, which in turn boosts the immune system. In using this technique, trained therapists can detect the specific rhythm, direction, depth and quality of lymph flow anywhere in the body. Due to the role of the lymphatic system, LDM can prove beneficial in the correction of numerous conditions, as well as in preventive health maintenance. Krystyn Mouser at SPAVITAL has recently obtained her certification in Lymph Drainage Massage (LDM) by completing a 110 hour course at the Colorado School of Healing Arts in Lakewood, and is now offering services in the Spa. Restaurant Insider

with JEFF SUSKIN
H BurgerCO brings Denver an innovative concept spun from an American classic - a restaurant that celebrates homegrown familiarity without sacrificing a style all its own.
From apps to nightcaps, you'll find only the highest quality ingredients, like locally sourced hormone- and antibiotic-free Angus beef, ground fresh daily. And of course, there's plenty to suit the tastes of any palate even if meat isn't on the agenda (the Garden Burger was no afterthought!). And from the create-your-salad menu, the healthy options are limitless. The sleek space is at once modern and familiar, comfortable and chic-a place that equally suits an early family dinner or a late-night gathering of friends. But whether you choose to pair your burger with a liquid-nitrogen milkshake and crayons, a draft beer, or a top-shelf bourbon, you'll be excited to come time and time again to H BurgerCO.
Winner, People's Choice Award for Best Burger -Denver Burger Battle, 2010 ... "The brightest new gem on the 16th Street Mall. Bristling with energy and enthusiasm, (H Burger) quickly pulled away from Denver's crowded pack of new burger joints - in quality, in service, in gusto, in promise... Ambitious H Burger was a hit straight out of the gate." -Tucker Shaw, Denver Post
