Inspirations: God and my parents are my inspiration. They have always been there for me especially when I've hit rock bottom. My parents are the most giving, hardworking people I've ever seen. Despite how people treat them or how difficult the situation may be, they keep giving and working nonstop. Without their living by example, I would not be who I am today or have the strength to overcome any obstacle.

A MESSAGE FROM KEITH
Keith MooreBALANCE AND YOUR OWN PURA VIDA

Work too much and your relationships suffer. Play too much and your productivity suffers. Exercise too much and your body doesn't have time to recover. Try too hard and your spontaneity suffers.

Pura Vida has always been about finding your balance in all aspects of life. Certainly our number one goal is to help our members get healthy through fitness, nutrition and overall better living, but also as important is developing a sense of community of like-minded people.  The member parties we have are a way to add a social component to the Club, in the hopes that our members will get to know each other and form a common bond through healthy living. The frequency of our monthly member socials and the number of people who attend attest to the desire to connect through a commonality.

While you will find that the staff at Pura Vida works very hard (and believes strongly in our members working very hard) to achieve goals, we are also known to play very hard when given the opportunity.  As important as it is to commit to pushing yourself to breaking a sweat 3+ times a week, it is just as important to spend time with family and friends, to enjoy life and to laugh...relax...live.

The 1,400 members of Pura Vida, although different in age, background and upbringing, have much in common: the desire to be a part of a healthy club that goes beyond what is commonly called a gym. We never set out to be a gym. The goal from J. Madden's inception of Pura Vida was to be a place that you wanted to come to everyday; a place where the staff welcomed you warmly and knew your name, a health club that offered the very best of fitness by the most talented and sought after professionals. I hope we live up to your (and our) expectations.

Thank you for being a member, finding balance, and embodying the good life.

REMINDER: Club closes at 5:00PM this THURSDAY for the final party of the year!

Happy Thanksgiving.

TRAINER TALK with Master Trainer Tim Harris
tim harris"Why is doing aerobic exercise more important than doing anaerobic?"

This isn't necessarily true. One is not more important than the other. A combination is the key.

Aerobic work is known for the method to obtain a heart rate response in a safe and controlled manner for heart health. Anaerobic work (i.e. sprinting) includes rapid bouts of exercise and is not as easy to control heart rate response. It also requires skeletal and muscular system demands to be able to complete such work and avoid injury.  Also, the type of exercise or equipment doesn't make the activity aerobic or anaerobic. The heart just acts in response to the muscles. If the muscles need more blood, it pumps more. It is the intensity and duration that make any movement aerobic or anaerobic.

While it is true that exercising at a lower percentage of maximal capacity (aerobic) burns a higher percentage of stored fat, the higher your work output (cardiovascular exercise that includes both aerobic and anaerobic) = an increased amount of caloric expenditure.

For optimal physical condition, the best practice is to include exercise in both realms.

Contact Tim at timh@puravidaclub.com to answer your fitness questions!
YOGA
DOGGIE STYLE: A Workshop with Adam Ayers E-RYT
Sunday, November 7th, 2-3:30pm
Members: Complimentary, Guests: $50
Downward Facing Dog is commonly referred to as a resting pose.  While this is partly true, several key themes need to be addressed, explored and embodied before it will elicit a physiological response.

  • Demonstrate the role of gravity as it pertains to musculoskeletal alignment
  • Address the alignment of the extremities to support the vertebral column in a semi-inverted position
  • Illustrate common restrictions and limitations that inhibit our freedom in Down Dog and offer a series of preliminary postures and exercises that will better inform our musculoskeletal alignment and alleviate these limitations
  • Integrate forward bending and back bending elements as they pertain to our extremities
Space is limited. Reserve yours today with Member Services.
