The definition of Pura Vida translates to "Pure Life," however, a closer approximation would be "plenty of life" or "full of life," "this is living" and even "cool!"Native Costa Ricans use it both as a greeting and a farewell, to express satisfaction and even to say "Thank you." Expats use the phrase as an expression of a leisurely lifestyle, however it is the true Costa Rican use that I am most interested in: A phrase to express a philosophy of strong community, perseverance, resilience in overcoming difficulties with good spirits, enjoying life fully and celebrating good fortune (of magnitudes both small and large) that we at Pura Vida Fitness try to exemplify.
 
The recent member social at Izakaya was a reminder that our strength as a business relies fully on our member community. I have said time and again that the relationship our staff has with our members is the most important differentiator.  Being a part of something 'bigger' with like-minded people is important in today's turbulent world. I am happy that the Pura Vida staff has friendships and feels emotionally connected to you, our member. This is most certainly an example of living Pura Vida.
 
Perseverance and resilience in overcoming difficulties with good spirits has been a part of our personal Pura Vida from day one.  Certainly opening a high-end luxury fitness club in the eye of an economic storm took bravado and what we ultimately realized, great determination and hard work. It has been our members that have helped us to be successful these past two and half years. Your belief in us (and our absolute belief in you) has been important and gratifying.
 
Finally, enjoying life fully and celebrating good fortune gives all of us a reason to live Pura Vida daily. Our tag line of "Embody the Good Life" was created to capture a bit of the Costa Rican way of living.
We are fortunate that we get to do this with you each time you're at the club.

tim harrisWhat is the best way to "warm-up" before exercise?

Our intention with a warm up is to gently take our circulatory, nervous, and muscular system from a lulled static state into the realm of the activity it is about to take place in.

A great way to do this is to through an active/dynamic warm-up. We do this with simple, single plane movements in the joints in order to create imbibition. This process of secretes synovial fluid in articulating joints and between the fascia encasing muscles. These motions also are used to stimulate the nervous system to activate muscles. From this, we increase the stress to the joints slightly by increasing intensity.
 
These movements are helpful for both strength training and energy system work. As you progress your warm up, it should start to mimic the work you are about to do. Complex movements will further activate the nervous system and increase joint mobility/stability. Practice light sets of the strength movements you are about to do.
EXAMPLE:  Walk... Light Plyometrics... Run.

Activities like static stretching can lull the nervous system by overriding the contractibility rate of the muscles and can further lead to instability of joints.

erinAs a previous four year Division I athlete at Duke University, Erin brings inherent value in addressing the needs of all types of athletes.  Her approach, while simple, is profound. She emphasizes the importance of more than just the Pilates repertoire executed in a 50-minute training session. As a certified Body Arts and Science International (BASI) Pilates instructor, Erin strives to educate her clients in all aspects of fitness -from the purpose of each exercise to the proper execution and the importance of proper rest and rehabilitation.  Her focused approach, attention to detail, and post-rehab client experience is incredibly valuable. She has made a serious impact on many of her clients' total body health and well-being; whether decreasing pain, improving posture, or strengthening certain imbalances.  Before joining the Pura Vida pilates team, Erin worked as an instructor in Florida and Southern California and trained under world renowned Rael Isacowitz learning the classical teaching of Pilates with a high emphasis on technique and form. 51.  Never skip a meal; your metabolism thrives on the expectation of food every 2-4 hours.
2.  Eat healthy balanced snacks that includes protein, healthy fats, and complex carbohydrates.
3. Manage your stress through exercise, meditation, reading, and time to yourself.
4.  Take a bioavailable multivitamin (like Infinity Greens, sold at the Member Services desk). These supply your body with high nutrient density, raw foods, and healthful enzymes, probiotics, and herbal complexes.
5.  Make vegetables your number one priority!  I rarely see a client who is not getting enough breads, flours, fats, and fruits.  Concentrate on your greens!


MOZZARELLA WRAP
mozzarella wrap1 corn tortilla
2-3 slices tomato
1 slice fresh mozzarella cheese
3-4 leaves of fresh arugula
drizzle of olive oil
s & p

Combine all ingredients on top of tortilla, and either bake in the oven for 5 minutes at 350 or heat in a skillet until cheese is melted.  This is a great healthy snack between meals. Add some turkey, salmon, or tofu for a more filling lunch option.
