Sarasota County Gets Fit!

Now is a great time of the year to consider biking instead of taking your car.  Lots of commuters are taking advanatge of Florida's winter weather to get fit and enjoy the fresh air.  Try biking to work a few times a week, or to the store, local events or when you take your child to school!

"Biking to work is great!" Says Kurt Richter from the City of Sarasota, who started biking to work about 6 months ago. "I feel a lot better, and I've lost weight."

Weiqi (Frank) Lin, who lives and works in Sarasota County, stopped by to tell us about biking to work: "I've been riding a bike to work everyday for the past five years, rain or shine!"

Sarasota County is working to form a bike pool for downtown locations to encourage biking riding during lunch time.  Stay tuned for details!

New Tax Benefit!

Effective January 1, 2009, bicycle commuters can receive a $20-a-month tax-free reimbursement for commuting by bicycle to work, when the bicycle is regularly used for travel between the employee's residence and place of employment.  The benefit can be administered by employers, using a voucher system and/or through a cash-reimbursement method.   Under this scenario the employer would reimburse the employees for cash outlay for costs associated with their monthly bike commute. The reimbursement would be for up to the $20 maximum monthly amount and the $20 would come from the cooperating employer.

Accor Services , a leading provider of transportation benefits commuter solutions in the United States, has developed a new program, the commuter check solution for bicycle commuters. Commuter Check for Bicycling™  vouchers are a convenient option for employers to participate in offering the $20 per month Bicycle Benefit.  For more information, go to:

News from Citrus Connection
Citrus Connection
It's been a busy few months at the Citrus Connection.  Ridership has been on the incline for several months.  The ridership numbers of September 2008 in comparison to September 2007 increased approximately 804 passenger trips per day, a 17% increase in average daily ridership.  Ridership in September was up an average of 320 passenger trips over August 2008.

September 1st eleven routes were revised or restructured to better serve the public need.  Many routes had not been adjusted in numerous years and, with travel patters always changing, it was time to revisit the routes.  The route changes were well publicized and communicated with the riders and, given the extent of the revisions, the changes went smoothly.

October 1st fares were increased to try and keep pace with rising costs.  Fuel costs increased 54% over a one year period.  Fares and discounted pass rates increased approximately 25%.  While riders were not enthusiastic about the increase, they were understanding regarding the fuel and general cost of doing business increases.

Over the past few months preparations have been underway for the launch of the new Automatic Vehicle Locator system (AVL).  The AVL system will provide real time location information for fixed route and Handy Buses.  Each vehicle was appropriately outfitted to utilize this service along with software installation and training for the users.  The target date to have the AVL system operational is mid to late November.
