HEADMASTER'S MESSAGE

This week's Torah portion is Emor. However, I would like to depart fromRabbiKahn tradition to discuss the tremendous event that occurred earlier this week when American forces killed Osama bin Laden (yemach shemo). When I heard the news I had an overwhelming feeling of gratitude: gratitude to our government leaders for never giving up the effort to bring bin Laden to justice; gratitude to the men and women who tracked him for almost a decade; gratitude to the soldiers who risked their lives to storm his compound; and profound gratitude to Hashem for allowing us to live to see the day when this blood-thirsty murderer was finally eliminated. In the Jewish tradition, there are several sources that encourage us not to celebrate the destruction of our enemies. After all, all human beings are part of G-d's creation. There are, however, other sources that require us to recognize G-d's mercy when we are saved from the hands of our pursuers. Osama bin Laden was not just our enemy; he was the enemy of the entire civilized world. His primary goal in life was to organize attacks on innocent people. Let us all pause this week to thank G-d for rescuing the world from an arch-terrorist, and let us recognize the dedication and courage of all those individuals who never tired in the pursuit of justice and whose actions have made the world a safer place for everyone.

Shabbat Shalom!

Rabbi Zvi Kahn

OUR TREE GARDEN HAS TAKEN ROOT

Tree Garden

Lower school students (including third-graders, pictured here with their teacher, Robin Elbaz) planted a tree and recited a special blessing in a birkat ha'ilanot ceremony.  (See inside for details - including how YOU can become part of this beautiful project.)

Special thanks to Eli Cieplinski for helping us make this project happen! And special thanks to the Columbus Foundation for its continuing support for all of CTA's gardening projects!

NEWS FROM THE LOWER SCHOOL JUDAICS DEPARTMENT
By Dror Karavani

Dror Karavani

Sixth-graders created projects to mark Yom Hashoah (Holocaust Memorial Day). These were displayed on Sunday evening at Ahavas Sholom Synagogue for the community Yom Hashoah program, so that everyone could share in the work being done at CTA. At school on Monday, our sixth-graders led CTA's Yom Hashoah ceremony, led by Rabbi Tzion Elbaz. Special thanks to Kate Willis, Laurie Alexander and Rabbi Yoself Hauser for helping the program come together. Our community shaliach, Noam Even, recited Kaddish and led the singing of Hatikvah.

Dror1 5-6On Wednesday, to celebrate Rosh Chodesh Iyar, lower-school students enjoyed treats and colorful decorations at lunchtime. They also visted our new tree garden to say the blessing for the trees, the 'Birkat Ha'elanot' thanking God for the creation of the world. CTA seniors also participated in this special ceremony along with their kindergarten buddies. Special thanks to friends who sponsored trees: Yehuda and Allegria Bitton in memory of Yehuda's mother, Saada Bitton; & Dr. Warren and Marlene Sobol, in honor of their children, Garret (CTA, 2006), Ethan (CTA, 2008), Emily (CTA, 2010), Keenan and Jacob.

Dror2 5-6We invite you to join us in creating this special space by sponsoring a tree for $180. This is a beautiful way to honor or commemorate a family member or loved one. Each year in the springtime, the CTA students will gather in the Birkat Ha'elanot Garden to say the special blessing that is recited upon seeing new blossoms. Sponsorship funds will support educational programs at CTA.If you would like to buy a tree, please contact Dror Karavani at dkaravani@torahacademy.org

NEWS FROM THE HEBREW DEPARTMENT
By Galit Golan

Galit 2010

Morah Kelly's 11th -12th grade students have been practicing for the Yom HaZikaron ceremony. Lowering the Israeli flag, and then raising it to full mast, the students, along with the entire school, commemorated and honored the Israeli soldiers who gave their lives protecting the state of Israel, and the victims of terrorism in Israel.
At the same time, the 7th and 8th graders have been practicing for DAGLANUT (Israeli flag parade), under the direction of David and Kelly Adar. Walking proudly with the Israeli flags, the students create shapes that are related to Yom Ha'Atzmaut, such as the number 63, the upcoming birthday of the state of Israel.

Galit1 5-6This feeling of connection and pride for the state of Israel is one of the ideas that is highly promoted at CTA. Therefore, we will celebrate Yom Ha'Atzmaut with a variety of activities, fun, creative and educational, from a lecture about the miracle of the state of Israel, to an Israel related game show, Israeli cooking, Israel related art projects, Israel scavenger hunt and much more.

Galit2 5-6Please join us at the JCC on Tuesday, May 10. The 7th and 8th graders will be performing the DAGLANUT (Israel flag parade) between 5:50-6:00pm, and grades 7-12 will present the Israeli Wax Museum and their "Touring Israel" projects in a fun and educational game of "Israel Scavenger Hunt". Pictures of Yom HaZikaron ceremony and Yom Ha'Atzmaut activities at CTA will follow next week.

If you have any questions about Yom Ha'Atzmaut and Yom HaZikaron events at CTA, please contact me at

ggolan@torahacademy.org or 864-0299 ext. 114.

SCHOLASTIC BOOK FAIR GEETING UNDERWAY

THANK YOU, CHERYL MILLER

Book Fair1It took hours of unpacking and arranging, and the result is a beautiful display, sure to attract plenty of book lovers.

We thank Cheryl Miller (left), mother of Shari Herszage and grandparent of Max, Shayna and Gillian Herszage, for taking on the job, all for the sheer joy of helping out.

Lots of great books for kids of all ages will be available May 9-13 and at Achievement Fair on May 11.  Come in to browse and shop and read!

Online sales have already begun and will remain open through May at: http://bookfairs.scholastic.com/homepage/cta. Visit the online Library and Classroom Wish Lists.

A book fair goal is to help grow CTA's library.  More sales means more books for our library!  So Mrs. Miller has set up some special boxes you also can fill to support our school and encourage literacy, through the One for Books campaign

Book Fair2Donate loose change or bills. The One for Books money collected stays at CTA and helps readers beyond our school and community.  Matching Scholastic donations provide books to national non-profit organizations dedicated to helping families in need.  What could be better than doing something good for others and having great books to read!

We also thank Mrs. Miller for working hard in the CTA library. She is organizing and plans to help restock it with new materials as the funds are available. Want to help with the fair or the library? Contact Cheryl Miller at chmiller813@wowway.com.

A SPECIAL GIFT FOR OUR PLAYGROUND

PlaygroundYou may have noticed that our playground has a new look, thanks to friends who generously donated specially designed mulch to beautify the landscape and provide a renewed, cushioned surface for the playing area. We thank Greg and Val Hall, and Debra Shuman-Shrigley and Paul Shrigley - grandparents of Morgan and Madison Hall - who donated the mulch in memory of Morgan and Madison's great-grandfather, Alvan E. Shuman.

PRACTICING THE DIPPING AND THE 'FOUR QUESTIONS'

Four Quest1Before our break, students participated in model seders, reenacting the story of the Exodus from Egypt in various ways. Kindergarten pupils, led by Shanny Katzman, took on the roles of the characters. Students in grades 5 and 6 attendted a full, traditional seder, led by Rabbi Tzion and Robin Elbaz. Dror Karavani, our lower school Judaics coordinator, led a seder for students in grades 2-3, dressing up as "visitors" from the story and quizzing students on their identities. Rabbi Yosef Hauser led a seder with the fourth-grade. Eighth-graders helped serve the meals. Thanks to Karan Tanenbaum and our helpers!
