Donate to Recovery Efforts
in Haiti

The images of the devastating earthquake in Haiti on January 12 continue to pour in - homes, schools and hospitals destroyed, families not only searching for loved ones, but also basic supplies to stay alive. In response to the long-term recovery needs, United Way Worldwide has mobilized staff, volunteers and resources to aid in the relief efforts. Examples of those needs include: access to health care; rebuilding schools and housing; and meeting critical basic needs for shelter, food and clothing.

It is estimated that more than 3 million have been affected by the earthquake. United Way agency partners are pulling together to aid disaster relief efforts in Haiti. The American Red Cross and The Salvation Army have deployed emergency relief teams and supplies to the disaster area.

The road to recovery has just begun for the citizens of Haiti. You can help rebuild lives by donating to the United Way Worldwide Disaster Fund. Gifts to the fund support long-term recovery efforts to rebuild lives and infrastructure devastated by the disaster and to address educational, financial, and health-related challenges. Click here to donate online or give a $5 donation by texting HAITI to 864833 (UNITED).

Together, we can make a difference. That's what it means to LIVE UNITED.

Company Campaign:  Mayo Clinic
Mayo Clinic photos"Teaming Up For the Community" was the leading theme for Mayo Clinic's high energy workplace campaign this year.  To spark a little friendly competition, employees were invited to participate in the Wii football tournament and compete for the most creative United Way partner agency mascot contest during the three-week campaign.

In the midst of all the fun, Mayo Clinic established a multi-departmental committee to be responsible for educating the staff about United Way-supported programs.  Mayo Clinic's leaders, Dr. William Rupp and Robert Brigham hosted a leadership event to jumpstart their campaign with Steve Halverson of Haskell, as the featured speaker. Halverson, who is from Minnesota, where Mayo Clinic was established, shared his special appreciation for the hospital's impact on the community and thanked them for their support during this year's campaign. To wrap up their campaign, the Mayo Team hosted a Tailgate Party including the Wii Super Bowl, where the winner of the mascot costume competition was announced. Ending with a high-energy finale, Mayo Clinic celebrates an increase of 36% in dollars raised and a 50% increase in participation!

Employee Campaign Chair:  Melinda Stivers, Zurich Insurance Services
Zurich photosAs Zurich's Employee Campaign Chairperson (ECC), Melinda Stivers has three United Way campaigns under her belt. She attends ECC training each year. She is always on the look-out for new and innovative ways to educate employees about United Way's impact in the community.  This year, she brought employees "up close and personal" with United Way partners through agency tours and volunteer projects, offering incentives for campaign participation. In addition, Melinda worked with United Way staff to host a Poverty Simulation Seminar for leadership donors. Through simulated learning exercises, participants role-played some of the day-to-day life choices a struggling family must navigate. Participants were grouped into family units with limited income and asked to perform the challenging tasks of buying food, paying utilities, maintaining a rent or mortgage payment, and finding affordable childcare. To ensure every employee heard United Way's message, she scheduled "rolling" campaign rallies, providing each department with campaign information and encouraging their participation.

New Business:  Brightway Insurance
Brightway Insurance hit the ground running, quickly recruiting employees to help with their campaign planning and details. They launched their campaign with an all staff event, featuring an agency speaker from Jewish Community Alliance, who shared the impact of United Way's work in keeping seniors engaged and independent in the community.  Incentives, such as wearing jeans to work, and various raffles helped spur participation. Wrapping up their first campaign, Brightway Insurance held a thank-you event to announce their inaugural campaign results - $4,777 and 68% participation! Way to go Brightway Insurance!
