| United Way Celebrates 85th Anniversary and Kicks Off 2009 Community Campaign |
On September 10, United Way of Northeast Florida kicked off its 2009 Community Campaign at Hemming Plaza in downtown Jacksonville. With nearly 400 guests in attendance, United Way's 2009 Campaign Cabinet, comprised of past and future campaign leadership as well as key community volunteers, rallied the audience and paid tribute to the organization's 85-year heritage at the site of its founding in 1924.

| A Closer Look at Poverty |
With employees from Zurich Insurance Services and State Farm Insurance Company, United Way of Northeast Florida takes a unique approach to educate citizens on the impact of poverty on the First Coast. On July 29, at the Brooks Family YMCA, more than 60 employees from Zurich and State Farm role-played the choices struggling families make each day during a half-day simulated learning exercise. Participants were grouped into families, such as a family of four or single individual, and asked to perform the challenging tasks of buying food, paying utilities, maintaining a rent or mortgage payment, and finding affordable childcare, on a limited income. read more |
| Taking a Break to Lend a Hand |
 As part of its workplace giving campaign, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Florida provided employees an opportunity to experience community service while at work. During the first week of September, close to 1,000 Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Florida employees participated in a series of on-campus teambuilding activities supporting area United Way programs and services.
