NYS Calorie Labeling

There is much progress in NYS on calorie labeling.  As you know, New York City enacted a calorie labeling regulation for chain restaurants last spring.  That regulation has been in effect for many months and appears to be making an impact.  A published study on NYC calorie labeling revealed that customers purchased 52 fewer calories when calorie labeling was available on menus and menu boards at point of purchase.

If you would like to advocate for the introduction and passage of a calorie labeling measure in your county or city, please contact nancy.huehnergarth@nyshepa.org

Mural Project!

mural project 2
On January 19th, MLK Day, The NYC Food and Fitness Partnership partnered with Public Health Solutions to sponsor a service day for City Year's "Young Heroes."

The Young Heroes helped to paint murals that will hang in multiple WIC centers to serve as colorful reminders of the healthy messages promoted by the new WIC Food Package.

The event was a great success! With the 120 middle school youth, the Partnership was able to produce a total of 30 portable murals that will be placed in various WIC agencies in NYC.  We will be holding unveiling ceremonies to hang the murals and have the youth talk about their experience.

The Women, Infant and Children (WIC) program provides a monthly supplement of foods chosen to provide key nutrients for mothers and young children.  New York State's WIC participation stands at over 500,000 as of September 2008. Almost 1 in 12 of these participants (approximately 44,000 women, infants and children) is served at one of the 15 Neighborhood WIC Program sites through Public Health Solutions.

Please contact: Elsa Gomez, Youth Leadership Project Associate, for more information on the project or the placement ceremonies.

NYC Strategic Alliance for Health

The center for Disease Control has awarded a five year grant of $2.6 million to the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH) to establish the New York City Alliance for Health ( NYC SAFH).

In the first year of the project the District Public Health Offices and the New York Academy of Medicine will convene key community institutions, civic leaders, coalitions and organizations to redefine alliance objectives and to develop and implement an action plan to reach these goals. Youth Engagement Event!
youth presentation AZ
The NYC Food and Fitness Partnership's Youth Settings Action Team and Baum Forum are co-producing a unique event for NYC youth, ages 15 -24, to be held during spring break in April 2009.  Opportunities for youth in food, farming and active living is the theme for a full day expo and conference being planned by and for NYC youth leaders who are interested in health, wellness, and sustainability in their own communities. Youth will gather to share their knowledge and expertise with each other and other youth, and to connect with organizations offering opportunities for further education, activism and career path introductions. This event serves as a catalyst for youth involvement and as a call for organizations and individuals to provide opportunities for youth.

Growing and Greening New York:  PlaNYC and the Future of the City, will make the complexities of greater environmental sustainability in New York City vivid, compelling, and understandable by bringing environmental concerns to life on an individual, human scale.  Organized in terms of a typical day in the life of a New Yorker, the exhibition will explore six essential areas addressed by the Bloomberg Administration's ambitious five-borough plan for sustainability by 2030: water; transportation; energy; open space; land; and climate change. The exhibition will feature architectural models, interactive displays, diagrams, renderings, photographs, hands-on examples of new materials, videos, and more, many of which have been created expressly for the exhibition.

Made between 1982 and 1984, the photographs in Broken Glass: Photographs of the South Bronx by Ray Mortenson focus on the burned out, abandoned, and razed structures of entire city blocks in the South Bronx, documenting the aftermath of a widespread urban economic crisis that plagued the United States in the 1970s.  Putting the political, economic and social causes for this collapse aside, Mortenson's photographs consider the land and loss in human terms.  They project a haunting silence, reminding us that these neighborhood streets were cradles of the community, lined with the homes of individuals and families.  Hints of a once prosperous district are revealed in Mortenson's work through a stark black-and-white portrayal of what remained.
