NYC YOUTH PARTICIPATE IN NETWORKING CONFERENCE
 
Six young people represented NYC and the Partnership at the first ever Youth Networking Conference in Tucson Arizona. Monica, along with Rebecca Camacho, Isabella Rivera, Shaun Abreu, Calvin Garner, Shari Rose and Laryssa Green spent four days with youth from the other 8 Food and Fitness sites.  
 
Our youth participated in a photo essay style assessment project of a Tuscon elementary school and had the opportunity to engage with school administrators about what they observed.

UNNATURAL CAUSES: Is Inequality Making Us Sick?
 
Unnatural Causes airs on PBS beginning March 27th- April 17th. The 4th segment, "Bad Sugar," features Food and Fitness partners from Tohono O'odham Nation. see, www.unnaturalcauses.org.
                                              
RWJF ACTING LIVING RESEARCH CALL FOR PROPOSALS

Active Living Research has released round 8 of their RFP. This round will focus on supporting research to inform policy and environmental strategies for increasing physical activity among children and adolescents, decreasing sedentary behavior and preventing obesity.

One Year Anniversary!
 
This month, the NYC Food and Fitness Partnership marks its one year anniversary.  In recognition of that, we are pleased to introduce this monthly update intended to ensure all members, and future members, are aware of activites and opportunities.

COMMUNITY CONNECTIONS 
 
Last month, members of the Campaign for Bronx Health surveyed 281 Bronx residents to determine their interest in community improvements.  The list below highlights the findings:
 

1. Increasing the number of farmers markets

2. Getting more outside play spaces for children and teenagers

3. Ensuring children in school get the required 120 minutes of physical activity per week that NYS requires in the near future

4.  Getting local bodegas to stock healthier foods

5.  Making it easier for people in the Bronx to walk and ride bikes

6.  Improving public access to Randall's Island

 

 
                                                                            

Action Team Updates
 
The Early Childhood Workgroup is a subgroup of the Youth Settings Action Team met on February 20th to hear from the  the New York State Department of Health aout the Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP).  The meetng focused on childhood obesity prevention in childcare settings.
 
The nex meeting will taking place on April 23, 2008 @9:30am (2 Lafayette Street, 18th Floor, Manhattan).
 
                                                                           
MEMBER SPOTLIGHT: PUNK ROPE & LIVE LIGHT... LIVE RIGHT
 
"Firsts" for Punk Rope in 2008
 
Punk Rope is an innovative business that provides playful fitness classes.  At a recent class at a public library in South Jamaica, Queens, Punk Rope had its first octogenarian student (at 83!).  Classes are offered throughout NYC. 
 
Punk Rope will launch "Hopping for Health," a program designed to help schools generate much-needed dollars to fund "healthy lifestyle" programs.

Live Light... Live Right of Broodale Hospital Celebrates New Partnerships
 

Live Light... Live Right is a weight management program for young people at Brookdale Hospital.

The Robin Hood Foundation: The Foundation has chosen to partly fund and support our program as their newest initiative to fight the ongoing obesity epidemic in NYC.

The Fresh Air Fund: We are piloting a program that integrates the needs of overweight children into a Fresh Air Fund camp for under privileged boys and girls between the ages of 8 and 12 years old. 

The New York Junior Tennis League: We will provide nutritional workshops, BMI Screenings and weight management tools for League participants and also referring overweight youth to participate in these tennis programs as part of their fitness schedule.

The Baum Forum presents the Schools, Food, and Community Conference on April 11 and 12.  Youth and adult participants are welcome. 

The Youth Settings Garden Taskforce  of the Partnership will co-host a workshop on school gardens!
 
National Park(ing) Day!

Last year, over 30 cities nationwide reclaimed hundreds of on-street parking spaces in their neighborhoods, converting them into lively parks and public spaces. In New York City, a dozen community organizations converted 20 on-street parking, see for yourself: http://www.streetfilms.org/archives/parking-day-2007-nyc/.

This year, Transportation Alternatives will once again join the Trust for Public Land in organizing Park(ing) Day NYC, 2008.  In the next two weeks, we are asking organizations, groups and individuals to submit locations.

 

Groups will be provided with small stipends and assisted in obtaining the necessary permits for the event.  If you have a location in mind, please contact Lindsey Lusher at lindsey@transalt.org  or 646-873-6039.

 

Youth Sports and Fitness Expo

The Greater Souther Brooklyn Health Coalition is co-sponsoring a Children's Fitness Expo at St. Francis College, April 5th, 10am-6pm.

Fit City 3: Promoting Physical Activity Through Design 

May 20th, 2008, 8:00 AM to 1:00 PM
Center for Architecture, 536 LaGuardia Place, New York

Join the American Institute of Architects, NY Chapter, and the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene for a conference that will examine the role that architecture and public policy can play in promoting physical activity for New Yorkers. This year, panels will focus on "PlaNYC and a Fit NYC" and "Thoughts from the Field" of development and construction. Keynote remarks will be delivered by Dr. James Sallis, director of Active Living Research, and Jan Gehl, Hon. FAIA, eminent urban planner and public space consultant from Copenhagen, Denmark.
